Lockdown Doorstep Project

Lockdown Doorstep Photo Project

The Lockdown doorstep photo project has spread across the nation as a means of recording and capturing families during this unprescedented time.  Covid 19 has swept across the world and ground life to a halt in a way we could never have imagined.   Whole countries are confined to their homes and families are banned from visinting one another, children unable to hug grandparents and lovers separated for weeks on end.    The story of the Corona Virus pandemic is something that will go down in history and will be a time that future generations will learn about in school.  I choose to participate in lockdown doorstep photo project as whilst this time is a strange one it really is one of historical significance.  A time where whilst families have been separated it has also brought people within households together.  Parents and children have re-connected and we have all had more time for one another.   The photos captured as part of this project will become a record of history, a record of when the world stopped.

My lockdown doorstep photos were very local and I remained within villages near to my own.  This was a neccessity due to the travel restrictions enforced as part of the goverment guidance, however this also highlighted the community spirit within our local villages and demonstrated the broad spectrum of people within.   I asked those that participated it share a brief account about themselves and their experience of Covid -19 and what the lockdown has meant for them.  I will share some of these stories below.  I did not take payment for this project, instead I asked participants to consider donating to the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance service instead!  Many charities have been effected by the pandemic with many fundraising events being cancelled and charity shops being forced to close, so these donations will be invaluable.  To date my Lockdown doorstep photo project has raised a fantastic £120 for the Air Ambulance.  I would love to reach £200 so if you would like to donate I have included the link below for you.

David and Pauline

Pauline is a legal secretary and David is retired.  Pauline has found it very strange working during this time when no personal contact is allowed.  Not being able to socialise with friends and visit family has been hard.    Pauline and David can not wait to be reunited with friends and family and really hope that the wedding of Pauline’s sister Tracey is able to go ahead in August.

Graham  & Michelle with their dogs, Cleo and Barbra

Graham and Michelle are both keyworkers so continue to work through the pandemic. Michelle runs a snack Bar on A17 feeding key workers. They have found working  stressful at times but are grateful that they can work. Graham misses socialising at the local pub on a Sunday but they have quite enjoyed a slower pace of life. They are shopping for their neighbour as she is shielding and so has been advised to not leave home for 12 weeks.  They both miss their families but knowing they are safe is peace of mind.

Claire, Paul, Dominic, Hope and Tilly

Paul is a lorry driver and away all week, continuing to support essential services during the pandemic.  They have not found lock down too bad as they lived in Germany for 8 years , so are used to not seeing family and spending time just with the kids . Tilly is autistic and  starting to struggle with everything now as she needs to know when she will be back in school etc,  she likes routine and hates the unknown. Only being able to see people from your own households mean that Dominic and Hope are both looking forward to seeing their girlfriends when this is all over as they have been seperated from many weeks. Tilly is looking forward to going back to normal routine . This will probably be the last time Claire will have all her children in the house altogether so this has been quite nice as the older two are both off to new adventures when this is over.

Elizabeth, Daryl, Cameron, and Pugs, Archie and Eric

Elizabeth is a hairdresser in the little village salon in Moulton and unable to work. Daryl  is dustcart driver and has remained working throughout lockdown which is a constant worry but every day is a new day.  They have been shopping for family and friends that cannot go out.  They are desperately missing family and friends and everyone but also clients at the salon. After moving to the village from Essex 2 years ago lockdown has made them realise they made the right move with the wonderful village community coming together and supporting each other.   The neighbours and surrounding community feel like family, they just absolutely love the wonderful and kind people here and how they have all pulled together.

Willow, Amara and Devin with Rocky the Dog

Dancing has kept the kids going during the lockdown as  it’s keeping them in touch with friends. They would normally spend 4 days a week after school at dance so the online classes have been a saviour.

Lisa, Jason and Caden with dogs Tin Tin and Coco

Lisa is the Landlady of The Golden Lion in Moulton Seas End.   The pub is the hub of the local community but the country wide lockdown has forced Lisa to close the pub and risk losing her business and home.   Lisa and the family have worked hard to try to support the local village and have created a pop up shop for essential supplies like Milk and bread, meaning people are not forced to face busy supermarkets.  Lisa has also created a basic take away menu on Friday evenings and a carvery collection service on Sundays.   I for one can not wait to visit for my Friday evening Pint when normal service is resumed.

I really enjoyed capturing the lockdown doorstep photo project.  It has been a pleasure meeting so many wonderful families and learning about everyones experiences.  Thank you to everyone that participated and donated to the Air Ambulance.

Marie

    Black and White Baby Photos

As part of the personal service that I provide for all my clients I always have a chat with parents about style and colour.  This conversation often takes place in advance of a photoshoot but may also occur at the start of a newborn photoshoot whilst baby is having a feed!

When Bodi’s parents booked their newborn photoshoot they had only one colour request!   They wanted the entire newborn collection to be Black and White!  Mum specifically wanted black and white baby photos of Bodi!

Now it is no secret that I am a lover of Black and white and I always provide a percentage of black and white baby photos within every newborn photoshoot collection however an entire gallery of black and white baby photos was a whole new ball game!  But what a client wants is what I deliver so it was time to rise to the challange.

I don’t normally blog about specfic photoshoot however I thought that since this was a little different it might be nice to show you all what a collection of black and white baby photos looks like.

Black and white baby photos planning

Prior to the session I carried out a little research for some additional posing inspiration and planned to use my black and grey back grounds for shooting on as these 2 are the ones that work well when converting images to black and white.  I also selected clothing to compliment this so that the focus was always brought back to baby’s face.

I really enjoyed being pushed outside my comfort zone and working to an unusal brief.  The chance to challenge my creativity whilst producing beautiful baby photos for Bodi’s parents was a lot of fun and a wonderful experience.  I’d love to hear what you think?  Do you like Black and white photos?

      Potty Training Tips

      Potty Training Tips

      Potty Training Tips

Whilst he world is in Lockdown and your stuck at home with your toddler now might be the perfect time to see if your little one is ready to leave the nappies behind, so I have put together a little guide with some great Potty training tips to help you on your way.
Potty-training is one of the biggest achievements of early childhood, but before your toddler can master it, he has to be both biologically and emotionally ready. Different children are ready at different ages and there is no right or wrong age for this to happen.   For me Elizabeth showed signs just before her 2nd birthday so we gave it a try but she then contracted chicken pox so we abadoned the potty and it was another 6 months before we tried again.  Alyssa on the other hand was an eager beaver and started to refuse a nappy at 18 months old, way before I was prepared.  Becasuse she is so petite I had real problems getting knickers small enough.  On the flip side I recall from my child minding days some children were well past their 3rd birthday before they were ready!

Potty-training involves putting together a set of individual skills in a certain order, such as being able to interpret the signals your body is giving you, undressing, having some control over your bowels and bladder, and washing your hands. Your child should have at least some of these skills mastered before starting potty-training, or you’ll both become frustrated.

Here are my Potty Training Tips to help you suceed.

      1. Potty Training Tips – Preparation

      • Get a potty. Many children feel more secure starting with one that sits on the floor rather than one that sits on top of the toilet. It’s less scary, and it gives them the security and balance that comes with being able to put their feet securely on the floor.
      • Making the potty accessible is important at the beginning so put the potty in a place that’s convenient to where your child spends most of his time. It doesn’t have to be in the bathroom; you could keep it in a corner of your playroom.
      • Let your child explore the potty and become familiar with it. Let him know that it’s special and it’s just for him.

      2. Potty Training Tips – Learning

      • Let your child practise sitting on the potty with their clothes on once or twice a day. Let her get up whenever she wants. Help them to become familar and relaxed with it.
      • Praise your child every step of the way, even the small ones and the ones that aren’t completely successful. Stay upbeat. Remember that this is her accomplishment, not yours.
      • Once she’s comfortable sitting on the potty with her clothes on, have her practise sitting on it with her clothes off. This helps her to become familiar with the concept of removing her clothes before going to the toilet. It also lets her feel what the seat is like next to her skin.
      • After a few days, when your child has a bowel movement in her nappy, have her watch you put it into the potty so that she can see where it should go. Explain to her that this is where wee and poo belong. (Children this age are also mastering the idea that certain things go in certain places.)
      • Look for signs that your child needs to urinate or move her bowels. Some children will tell you in so many words. Others will grimace or grunt or get into a particular position. When that happens, ask her if she needs to go.
      • Let your child see you sitting on the toilet. Let her sit on her potty at the same time, if it’s in the bathroom. It’s easier for boys if they first learn to urinate while sitting down. If they begin by standing up, sometimes they’ll resist sitting down to have a bowel movement; it’s too confusing.
      • Have her practise washing her hands with soap and water every time she gets off the potty, even if she doesn’t do anything.
      • Keep your child in easy-to-remove clothing, such as trousers that she can simply pull down without having to unbutton anything, or a dress or skirt. That increases the likelihood of success. Alternatively, begin by letting her run around the house for a few days without any trousers on. Offer to remind her every hour to try using the potty. This will help her learn to interpret the signals that her body is giving to her.
      • Share what you’re doing and how you’re doing it with the other caregivers in your child’s life, such as your childminder and grandparents. That way your child will have consistent expectations and support, which will make things easier.

      3. Potty Training Tips – Reinforcement

      • Give your child lots of praise at each stage of learning. It’s also a good idea to praise him whenever he tells you he has to use the potty, even if you’ve just asked him the question.
      • Expect him to make mistakes, especially in the beginning. Don’t get angry; that will just make things take longer. If he resists trying something new, it probably means he’s not ready yet. Simply back off and try again in a few days or even weeks.
      • Once your child has been successful for a few days, start making the change to underwear. Some children feel more secure in nappies or training pants; others can’t wait for ‘big boy’ or ‘big girl’ underwear. Let your child’s reaction guide you in how quickly you make the change.
      • Remember that some young children are frightened by the sound and actions of a flushing toilet. If he’s bothered by it, don’t force him to flush; do it after he leaves the room. That fear usually goes away in a few months.

Be consistent with preparation, learning and reinforcement, and you will be surprised how soon you will get rid of those nappies for good!

      DIY newborn photoshoot

      DIY newborn photoshoot

      DIY Newborn Photoshoot

It’s a funny time we are experiencing at the moment.  One that none of us could have imagined in our wildest dreams.   It breaks my heart that I am unable to do the job that I love and that so many of you are unable to visit as planned for me to capture beautiful newborn photos for you.   I know that I have promised that we will capture photos for you as soon as we are allowed but in the mean time here are some tips for your own DIY newborn photoshoot.

My fabulous model in these photos is Bernie!  Bernie is my stand in baby,  SIB is a specialist photography training aid designed to look, feel, and move like a real baby.  I have used her here as obviously my own babies are all grown up.  All images in this post are taken on my I phone XR and edited within the phone software so there is nothing here you can not do yourself.

      1. Warmth

Ensuring your home is super warm will help when photographing your baby.  Heat the room to around 26 C if possible.   This will help keep baby calm and settled, especially if you plan to capture some naked photos.

      2. White noise

Have some soothing white noise to hand.  There are lots of Apps available for your phone that are completely free.  White noise is great for soothing and settling baby.

      3. Food

Start by feeding your baby. A happy, sleepy baby is a well fed baby.   If baby is fed and relaxed you will be able to photograph them much more easily.  Sleepy babies tend to naturally curl up and so this will help you capture them more natually.

      4. Make use of the light in your home

Take advantatge of the natural light coming through windows.  Stand close to the window and remove clutter from the background.  This will help to draw attention to your beautiful baby.

      5. Use Portrait mode

You don’t need a fancy camera.  Portrait mode on your phone is all you need.  All the examples in this post are taken on an IPhone XR, on portrait mode and edited within the phone.

      6.  Keep it simple

Don’t attempt the posed, neatly postioned images seen on my website.  I have undertaken years of training and practise to create these.  Instead opt for natural simple images and more lifestyle story telling photographs.

      7. Details

Remember to capture details.  10 little fingers, tiny toes and their cute button nose.

       8. Take photos with you

Capturing lifestyle photos with Mummy and Daddy is a great way to capture the moment and the love that you as a family share.  Your new baby will love these precious photos as they grow up.

      9. Clothing

It helps if the clothing you and baby are wearing is plain and simple.  Whites and neutral colours work well but avoid patterns as these are distracting.

      10. Swaddle

All babies loved to be cosy so wrapping them in a swaddle is perfect.  Use a muslin or a stretchy scarf if you have one.  Cross and lift their legs over their little tummy before wrapping.

I hope these suggestions for a DIY photoshoot  help you to capture some priceless memories of your newborn baby.  These natural precious family photos will be wonderful memories that you will look back on for years to come.   Hopefully it won’t be too much longer before I can welcome you into the studio and capture some professional images to compliment the ones you have created.

          Education Ideas – Learning Resources

          Education Ideas – Learning Resources

          Education Ideas

Goodness our lives have been turned upside down and inside out since I last wrote a blog for you all and we now find ourselves in very uncertain times.  Life as we know it has ground to a halt and things are changing on a daily basis.   Last night brought the annuncement that as of Friday all schools in the UK will close for an undefined length of time.   So on top of the panic and anxiety this virus has brought us we are all now wondering how we are going to educate and entertain our children whilst trying to maintain our work commitments from our make shift home offices.

Whilst I don’t have all the answers I thought I would a) share my plan with you all and b) list the education ideas via online resources I have found so far.   Whilst all will not be relevent to every family hopefully there will be something useful for everyone.  Perhaps you could add your ideas to the comments and continue to spread the support.

DIsplayed above is my draft timetable ready for next week.  My children are of secondary school age and I am expecting teachers to be setting work via the school Virtual Learning Enviroment which both my girls can access and work on independently.  My hope is that I will be able to use this time to maintain my own work commitments whilst supervising their independant work.   Those of you with younger children might need to shorten the length of the structured learning blocks as 90 minutes will be too long for their little brains.    I have a lot of outside time listed on my timetable.  This is because I want to get outside as much as possible whilst we are still able too.  Those of you that have been to the studio or followed my journey will know that I am a big runner and also that I own 2 crazy dogs so exercise is a big part of family life.  When I shared my draft plan with my 13 year old this morning her first question was ‘where is my run time?’  I’m so glad that my fitness has rubbed off on her and so ‘break’ time may be extended if she chooses to use that time to go for a run.

I have suggested to my girls that if we work hard to achieve the structured learning set by school then we can take Fridays off as extra Family time.  Whilst I want to keep routine for the girls and myself  and try and maintain their education,  I really want to take the opportunity to spend extra quality time with them and strengthen our relationships, thus gaining some positive out of this challenging time.

          Education Ideas –  Resources

Below I have listed a range of resources  I have found for a variety of age groups that may help parents with education ideas or fun activities to keep their children entertained.

Go Noddle – This is an App that was reccommended to me when myself and the children participated in RED January.  It has a range of fun dance routines to encourage movement and getting active.  Perfect for wet days when we can’t get out for a walk or when restrictions become even tighter.  When looking at my time table this morning  my 12 year old immediately mentioned the App when she noticed that I had added ‘fitness’ to the instructions for break.

Cosmic Yoga – A You Tube channel that uses yoga for interactive story telling.  A great way to get kids active and enhance their imagination.

Twinkl – Has education ideas in the form of printable resources ranging from Early years to secondary school and I believe they are offering 1 month free to support parents during the pandemic so get downloading quick.

Outschool – Allows you to access group learning via an online enviroment.  There are learning enviroments for children aged 3 – 18 in a range of subject matters.

Virtual Museum tours – I love the look of this and my 13 year old will no doubt spend hours exploring.  This article includes links to 12 famous museums from around the world that provide virtual tours.  To support the virtual tours here is a resource with free colouring pages of museum artifacts.

Dragon box – An app to support learning of Maths for all ages.

World Geography Games – online quizes looking at captial cities / flags of the world and other geography related questions.

Teacher Monster – Perfect for younger learners.  It expores phonics through reading games.

I am sure that there are hundreds of other great Education Ideas for learning online and I’d love if you could share your children’s favourites in the comments below.  Helping each other out during these difficult times is so important so please do get sharing and Happy learning.
