Photography Studio 2020 review

Photography Studio 2020 review

Photography studio – 2020 a year like now other!

When I started to think about writing my photography studio 2020 review my heart sank!   How was I going to be able write something positve and uplifiting?  But actually once I started to prepare my material I realised that 2020 had been pretty spectacular for my photography studio.  The year like no other has forced me to think outside the box and push my boundaires like never before.

Despite my photography studio being closed for over 4 months of the year I have been able to photograph lots of adorable new babies.  The first Lockdown back in March meant that by the time some of the babies were able to visit the photography studio they were as old as 10 weeks.  Prior to 2020 this would have sent me into a wave of panic but the reality proved to be much easier than I imagined and I was able to still create stunning baby photos despite them being less interested in sleep then I was used to.

Being closed for 12 weeks was a very challenging experience and I know I am not alone in the financial worry that this caused.  Creating the wonderful digital creations via photos taken by my clients gave me a little income and gave me something to keep me busy why my photography studio was closed and trapped at home for days at a time.

Photography Studio Lockdown Project

The lockdown had a massive impact on families and businesses across the world but it also had a massive impact on the funds that chairities recieve.  Many many charitable events were cancelled and so the money raised from these also lost.   I wanted to do something to help them, so in my little corner of Lincolnshire I did my own little Lockdown doorstep project.   As we were only able to leave our homes for exercise I took to walking the local area with my camera and capturing families at their front doors in return for a donation to the Lincolnshire Air Amubulance.   I loved that as well as supporting a local charity the project reflected life in 2020.

During the first lockdown I spent some time in my little photography studio working on some personal projects.  It was nice to be able to work on some things for myself and experiment a little.  Sadly my youngest isn’t always a willing model but my eldest was keen to help and as alway my four legged children were keen to co-operate in return for sausages.

In the absence of squiggy babies to photograph I was also able to finally take time to put together a panel of images for submission to the Guild of Photographers and was delighted to be awarded my qualified status.  I have since started to think about my panel for craftsman and look forward to submitting another panel in the future.

As restrictions started to lift in June and I was able to reopen my photography studio I noticed a shift in enquires. as well as capturing my usual babies, sitters and cake smash clients there was an increase in Family photography enquires.  I guess the change in lifestyle and not being able to visit family had brought home the importance of capturing loved ones and making memories.  It has been a true honour to record so many wonderful families this year and I really hope this trend continues going into 2021.

Finally I would like to say thank you to all of my wonderful clients for trusting me to capture your memories for you. It truely has been a pleasure.  It really is true,  If you do a job you love then you never have to work a day in your life.  I am really blessed to be in such a postion.

I look forward to meeting many more adorable babies and families in 2021, along with seeing lots of familiar faces who have sessions already booked. I do love that you all come back time and time again and I am able to enjoy watching your little ones grow.

Wishing you all a fantastic 2021!

How to celebrate a lockdown birthday

How to celebrate a lockdown birthday

      Lockdown Birthday celebrations

With the queens birthday in just 3 days time my thoughts turn to how she will celebrate whilst in lockdown at Winsor Castle.  My own birthday is just a few days later so hopefully my family will see this and pick up on a few hints.

      1.  Lets start with Cake!  Every birthday celebration requires cake so how about making a surprise socially distanced visit with a personalised homemade cake? If my own family are reading this, don’t forget it needs to be Gluten Free!

      2.  With groups of 6 now being allowed to meet in public places or private gardens how about a small garden party / BBQ!  I think after being isolated with only 2 or 3 people for so long spending time with loved ones is the best possible gift available.

      3.  There are so many Lockdown birthday novelty gifts available which are a fun way to remember the weirdest birthday we are likely to experience.  As a household full of Friends fanatics this Friends inspired t-shirt is my favourite.   Available via Amazon.

      4.  You could celebrate with your favourite outdoor activity.  For me this will most definately be a long peaceful child free run.  But other ideas include a family trip to the beach or walk in country.

      5.  You could organise for friends and family to send video messages.  We might not all be able to get togther face to face but a collection of messages will help the birthday girl or boy feel loved and special.

I hope that these ideas provide you with some inspiration on ways you can mark someones special day.   I would love to hear what you end up doing.

          5 alternatives to Prom

          5 Alternatives to Prom

It breaks my heart that so many young people have had their Prom’s cancelled.  Every year I have the honour of meeting many young people at their prom and capturing them in the finary with their friends and teachers.  I am so sad that the class of 2020 don’t get to celebrate this tradition.  However I really do hope they still get to celebrate the end of an amazing time in their lives and mark the start of the next chapter in some way, so I have put together this article of 5 great alternatives to Prom.

          1.  Over the last 10 weeks we have all discovered how technology can bring us together when we are kept apart so how about an online virtual prom.  Dress up and join your friends on Zoom or the new Facebook rooms and have your own celebration.

          2.  Why not plan an outdoor picnic.  As lockdown rules are relaxed across the country you could plan to meet a small group of frineds for a socially distanced picnic and sports game in your favourite outdoor space.

          3.  You could have a Prom at home with your family instead!  The whole family could get dressed up and have a fancy meal and party at home. One young girl in America was surprised by her parents when they organised exactly this.  You can read about it here.

          4.  Another activity that has become popular over the last 10 weeks is socially distanced created movies / songs.  You could get together virtually with your class mates and create a fun video or song that reminds you and celebrates your time at school.  This would be a fantatic lasting memory of your unique final year of schooling.

          5.  How about enjoying your own personal Prom photoshoot?  A chance to get dressed up and do your hair and make up just like your real prom.  Head to your favourite park and dance and laugh whilst it’s captured on camera.  You could do this alone or with a small group of friends.  A perfect celebration and memory captured on camera.

I hope that these ideas provide you with some inspiration on ways you can mark this special time in your life.    I would love to hear what you end up doing.

              Potty Training Tips

              Potty Training Tips

              Potty Training Tips

Whilst he world is in Lockdown and your stuck at home with your toddler now might be the perfect time to see if your little one is ready to leave the nappies behind, so I have put together a little guide with some great Potty training tips to help you on your way.
Potty-training is one of the biggest achievements of early childhood, but before your toddler can master it, he has to be both biologically and emotionally ready. Different children are ready at different ages and there is no right or wrong age for this to happen.   For me Elizabeth showed signs just before her 2nd birthday so we gave it a try but she then contracted chicken pox so we abadoned the potty and it was another 6 months before we tried again.  Alyssa on the other hand was an eager beaver and started to refuse a nappy at 18 months old, way before I was prepared.  Becasuse she is so petite I had real problems getting knickers small enough.  On the flip side I recall from my child minding days some children were well past their 3rd birthday before they were ready!

Potty-training involves putting together a set of individual skills in a certain order, such as being able to interpret the signals your body is giving you, undressing, having some control over your bowels and bladder, and washing your hands. Your child should have at least some of these skills mastered before starting potty-training, or you’ll both become frustrated.

Here are my Potty Training Tips to help you suceed.

              1. Potty Training Tips – Preparation

              • Get a potty. Many children feel more secure starting with one that sits on the floor rather than one that sits on top of the toilet. It’s less scary, and it gives them the security and balance that comes with being able to put their feet securely on the floor.
              • Making the potty accessible is important at the beginning so put the potty in a place that’s convenient to where your child spends most of his time. It doesn’t have to be in the bathroom; you could keep it in a corner of your playroom.
              • Let your child explore the potty and become familiar with it. Let him know that it’s special and it’s just for him.

              2. Potty Training Tips – Learning

              • Let your child practise sitting on the potty with their clothes on once or twice a day. Let her get up whenever she wants. Help them to become familar and relaxed with it.
              • Praise your child every step of the way, even the small ones and the ones that aren’t completely successful. Stay upbeat. Remember that this is her accomplishment, not yours.
              • Once she’s comfortable sitting on the potty with her clothes on, have her practise sitting on it with her clothes off. This helps her to become familiar with the concept of removing her clothes before going to the toilet. It also lets her feel what the seat is like next to her skin.
              • After a few days, when your child has a bowel movement in her nappy, have her watch you put it into the potty so that she can see where it should go. Explain to her that this is where wee and poo belong. (Children this age are also mastering the idea that certain things go in certain places.)
              • Look for signs that your child needs to urinate or move her bowels. Some children will tell you in so many words. Others will grimace or grunt or get into a particular position. When that happens, ask her if she needs to go.
              • Let your child see you sitting on the toilet. Let her sit on her potty at the same time, if it’s in the bathroom. It’s easier for boys if they first learn to urinate while sitting down. If they begin by standing up, sometimes they’ll resist sitting down to have a bowel movement; it’s too confusing.
              • Have her practise washing her hands with soap and water every time she gets off the potty, even if she doesn’t do anything.
              • Keep your child in easy-to-remove clothing, such as trousers that she can simply pull down without having to unbutton anything, or a dress or skirt. That increases the likelihood of success. Alternatively, begin by letting her run around the house for a few days without any trousers on. Offer to remind her every hour to try using the potty. This will help her learn to interpret the signals that her body is giving to her.
              • Share what you’re doing and how you’re doing it with the other caregivers in your child’s life, such as your childminder and grandparents. That way your child will have consistent expectations and support, which will make things easier.

              3. Potty Training Tips – Reinforcement

              • Give your child lots of praise at each stage of learning. It’s also a good idea to praise him whenever he tells you he has to use the potty, even if you’ve just asked him the question.
              • Expect him to make mistakes, especially in the beginning. Don’t get angry; that will just make things take longer. If he resists trying something new, it probably means he’s not ready yet. Simply back off and try again in a few days or even weeks.
              • Once your child has been successful for a few days, start making the change to underwear. Some children feel more secure in nappies or training pants; others can’t wait for ‘big boy’ or ‘big girl’ underwear. Let your child’s reaction guide you in how quickly you make the change.
              • Remember that some young children are frightened by the sound and actions of a flushing toilet. If he’s bothered by it, don’t force him to flush; do it after he leaves the room. That fear usually goes away in a few months.

Be consistent with preparation, learning and reinforcement, and you will be surprised how soon you will get rid of those nappies for good!

              Education Ideas – Learning Resources

              Education Ideas – Learning Resources

              Education Ideas

Goodness our lives have been turned upside down and inside out since I last wrote a blog for you all and we now find ourselves in very uncertain times.  Life as we know it has ground to a halt and things are changing on a daily basis.   Last night brought the annuncement that as of Friday all schools in the UK will close for an undefined length of time.   So on top of the panic and anxiety this virus has brought us we are all now wondering how we are going to educate and entertain our children whilst trying to maintain our work commitments from our make shift home offices.

Whilst I don’t have all the answers I thought I would a) share my plan with you all and b) list the education ideas via online resources I have found so far.   Whilst all will not be relevent to every family hopefully there will be something useful for everyone.  Perhaps you could add your ideas to the comments and continue to spread the support.

DIsplayed above is my draft timetable ready for next week.  My children are of secondary school age and I am expecting teachers to be setting work via the school Virtual Learning Enviroment which both my girls can access and work on independently.  My hope is that I will be able to use this time to maintain my own work commitments whilst supervising their independant work.   Those of you with younger children might need to shorten the length of the structured learning blocks as 90 minutes will be too long for their little brains.    I have a lot of outside time listed on my timetable.  This is because I want to get outside as much as possible whilst we are still able too.  Those of you that have been to the studio or followed my journey will know that I am a big runner and also that I own 2 crazy dogs so exercise is a big part of family life.  When I shared my draft plan with my 13 year old this morning her first question was ‘where is my run time?’  I’m so glad that my fitness has rubbed off on her and so ‘break’ time may be extended if she chooses to use that time to go for a run.

I have suggested to my girls that if we work hard to achieve the structured learning set by school then we can take Fridays off as extra Family time.  Whilst I want to keep routine for the girls and myself  and try and maintain their education,  I really want to take the opportunity to spend extra quality time with them and strengthen our relationships, thus gaining some positive out of this challenging time.

              Education Ideas –  Resources

Below I have listed a range of resources  I have found for a variety of age groups that may help parents with education ideas or fun activities to keep their children entertained.

Go Noddle – This is an App that was reccommended to me when myself and the children participated in RED January.  It has a range of fun dance routines to encourage movement and getting active.  Perfect for wet days when we can’t get out for a walk or when restrictions become even tighter.  When looking at my time table this morning  my 12 year old immediately mentioned the App when she noticed that I had added ‘fitness’ to the instructions for break.

Cosmic Yoga – A You Tube channel that uses yoga for interactive story telling.  A great way to get kids active and enhance their imagination.

Twinkl – Has education ideas in the form of printable resources ranging from Early years to secondary school and I believe they are offering 1 month free to support parents during the pandemic so get downloading quick.

Outschool – Allows you to access group learning via an online enviroment.  There are learning enviroments for children aged 3 – 18 in a range of subject matters.

Virtual Museum tours – I love the look of this and my 13 year old will no doubt spend hours exploring.  This article includes links to 12 famous museums from around the world that provide virtual tours.  To support the virtual tours here is a resource with free colouring pages of museum artifacts.

Dragon box – An app to support learning of Maths for all ages.

World Geography Games – online quizes looking at captial cities / flags of the world and other geography related questions.

Teacher Monster – Perfect for younger learners.  It expores phonics through reading games.

I am sure that there are hundreds of other great Education Ideas for learning online and I’d love if you could share your children’s favourites in the comments below.  Helping each other out during these difficult times is so important so please do get sharing and Happy learning.

Gift Ideas for Mothers day – Photoshoot ideas

Top Photography Gift Ideas Mothers Day

Mothers Day is fast approaching, 22nd March 2020 is just 10 days away so if you haven’t organised a gift for your lovely Mum or for your amazing wife (on behalf of your small children) then this is the list for you.  Below are my top photography gift ideas for mothers day.

                1.  First up the stunning Mummy and Me Mini sessions.  These are a wonderful short photoshoot to celebrate the love between a Mother and her children.  Suitable for boys and girls of all ages these are all inclusive sessions include a choice  of 2, 5, 0r 10 digial images.

                2.  A family Photoshoot is a wonderful opportuinty to spoil Mum with a family portrait.  In general, when photos are taken on holiday or day trips I bet Mum is the one to capture the picture?  So there a plenty of photos of Dad and the children but few which include Mum.  I’m sure Mum would love to have the oppurtunity to be included in a wonderful family photo.

                3.  My beautiul Bluebell Mini sessions take plance in April and are really popular for those looking for a more relaxed family photoshoot.  Sessions take place in the heart of the countryside within the Bluebell woodland and are ideal for ‘ of children or those with Furbabies.

                4.  Maybe you want to spoil a Mummy to be who is expeccting her first baby.  In which case a Maternity photoshoot, or Bump to Baby Package would be idea.  I chance to record her pregancy, her journey to motherhood.  Pregnancy is a special time and capturing it on camera is wonderful.  My own children love looking at photos of me when I was pregnant with them.

                5.   Alternatively for the expectant Mum or new Mum a Newborn Photoshoot of their new precious bundle.  The newborn phase is so fleeting and new mums are often tired and drained duing this time so a wonderful gift of newborn photography is a perfect gift to ensure the special time is recorded.

I hope that you are now full equipped to spoil Mum on the 22nd March and I hope she has an amazing Mothers Day.
