BEHIND THE SCENES OF A NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT

Newborn Photoshoot collage

A newborn photoshoot is one of many lovely ways to welcome your new addition to the world. Capturing them in those first few weeks, while still so small and sleepy, provides gorgeous memories that last a lifetime.

You’ve probably done a bit of research if you have been considering a newborn photoshoot, because of course, you want the very best for your baby.

Is all the information you’ve read coming out of your ears? All jumbled up and slightly confusing?

Are you a bit overwhelmed trying to take it all in?

Never fear! I am here to take you on a walk through one of my sessions, so you know exactly what to expect.

A Newborn Photoshoot with Slice of Life Photography: Prep!

As possibly one of your first outings with your brand new baby, the thought of your session can be a bit daunting, that’s why I put so much care into creating a calm, relaxful and smooth experience for you.

From the studio space, to the booking process, everything is designed around you and your baby.

And just in case you landed here from Google, my studio is based in Spalding (Lincolnshire) within easy reach of Peterborough, Sleaford, Kings Lynn, Wisbech & Boston.

Back to our baby!

Prior to your session, I will have provided you with a preparation guide, with all the tips you need to ensure a smooth session. We will have discussed colours, likes and dislikes, and how you want to display your photographs – all ready to create the newborn images of your dreams.

You’ll know that my studio is warm and cosy with everything you need for a small baby’s comfort. (And yours, of course!)

The session – let’s start!

My priority throughout is your baby’s comfort and safety. A happy, relaxed baby means me being able to capture on camera all those newborn details that you never want to forget.

You can get settled with a hot drink, while I work my magic. I will read your baby’s body language to help me determine throughout the session which poses and positions to place them in. Some babies fall into a deep sleep straight away, some take a bit longer. Some may require a top up feed and swaddling, others are happy naked – there is no right or wrong.

The newborn photoshoot is completely baby led and by keeping it this way, I can be sure they are always comfortable, as I gently encourage them into various poses, and use my beautiful wraps, props and outfits to achieve your stunning gallery of images.

Family images – Join in!

While the star of the show is most definitely your baby, I do like to include you parents, it’s so important to show that family bond, and your baby will love to look back on family images for years to come.

I understand you may not be feeling your best, so I have some clever tricks to help relax you and posing and editing techniques that will mean you will always view your family images thinking, “I am SO pleased we had these done!”

We can also include siblings where applicable, so the whole family gets involved.

And after your session…

Your newborn photoshoot is finished but of course, that’s not the end. Once you go home to enjoy your new baby, my job carries on.

I will beautifully edit your gallery of images and you’ll be invited to a no-stress ordering appointment within a few weeks, so you can see your images and decide what to buy. There will be no pressure, and I only want you to buy the images you love!

BABY’S FIRST BIRTHDAY IDEAS FOR PARENTS

BABY’S FIRST BIRTHDAY IDEAS FOR PARENTS

BABY’S FIRST BIRTHDAY IDEAS FOR PARENTS

Congratulations, you have made it through the first year of parenthood!

When your baby turns one, you’ve both reached an important milestone… and you might soon realise that for you, as a mum, this is an emotional one!

You might find yourself saving every “first-year-anything” for their memory box, frantically trying to catch up with filling their baby book and get all teary staring at them, praying that you will never, ever forget the feel of their soft skin against your chest.

    MAKE THEIR FIRST BIRTHDAY SPECIAL

As you approach the end of the emotional roller-coaster that the first year as a new parent is, you will also start wondering how you can also make their first birthday extra meaningful and special.

If you are here, chances are you have done a bit of Googling and if that’s the case you have also probably ended up scrolling through Pinterest suggestions for a perfectly planned, colour-coordinated extravaganza.

And… yes, you’ve guessed it. We are not going to overwhelm you with “top ten activities” guides or endless checklists to plan their first birthday party.

Instead, let’s look at 5 stress-free ideas to celebrate and cherish this incredible, precious journey your family is on.

    START A NEW FAMILY TRADITION

Family traditions are a beautiful way of creating lasting memories to reminisce about in the future, across generations. So, what better way to start than your baby’s first birthday?

    Here are some ideas:

    1 – A BIRTHDAY LETTER

If you enjoy writing, start with a birthday letter to your little one.

While they won’t be able to read or appreciate it just yet, having a handwritten note from you detailing favourite memories from their first year will be a treasured keepsake down the line.

Of course, you can even get your partner involved!

And since this will become a yearly tradition, you might want to get a little box to keep these memories safe. Should you not already have one you like, the Tiny Box Company is a great place to find ideas.

    2 – PLANT SOMETHING

This is an idea many of us discard if a garden isn’t in the cards just yet… but actually, you don’t even need outdoor space!

You can start with something smaller than a tree, flowers or herbs for example, and let your little one dig into the dirt with you while you other half snaps away.

Alternatively, you can use websites like One Tree Planted to plant trees for you for as little as $1 (they even issue a certificate for you).

    3 – CREATE A MEMORY BOOK

And get your loved ones involved!

By the end of your baby’s first year, your phone will be overflowing with cute snaps and there is a chance that this is also the case for your extended family.

Ask them to send you a photo of their favourite memory with your birthday boy or girl and tell you what makes it so special to them.

Ensure to have all of these photos printed out and collect them in a nice album or a box, for your little one to have when they grow up.

… AND GET SOME PHOTOS DONE RIGHT!

Sure, phones are great to snap a few shots at home, but these memories are way too precious for you to only rely on your phone camera!

Imagine your little one, not little anymore, looking at your family album 30 years from now: would you want them to only find faded photographs where one important person of the family is always missing (someone’s got to take those photos!)?

There are a couple of options for you in this sense:

1 – A CAKE (OR FRUIT) SMASH SESSION

Fun, frosting and bubbles (soapy ones, before you ask!) … What more could you want for a birthday?

Cake Smash photoshoots are a parents’ favourite when it comes to celebrating the first birthday as giving your baby a fun, exciting and new activity is ideal for creating some truly adorable candid portraits.

Cake Smashes at Slice of Life Photography are even more special because include 3 sessions in one:

    1 – A Mini Sitter

To capture some simple portraits of your little one in their birthday finery.

    first birthday ideas

    2 – Introducing… the Cake!

Time for some fun! We’ll bring the cake in and capture some “messy”, fun shots. And if you prefer a more natural alternative, we can replace the cake with fruit!

    first birthday ideas
    3 – Tub time!

Finally, a little tub time in a wonderful child size roll top bath to allow your little one to clean up and relax.

    first birthday ideas

    2 – A FAMILY SESSION

If you want to focus more on classic fmily portraits, then a Family Photoshoot might be the best choice for you.

This session focuses more on the family, including siblings and parents in the poses, to capture timeless portraits that you can cherish forever.

Since the feel and look of these two sessions (Cake Smash & Splash and Family Photoshoot) is so different, many families choose to book both at different stages of the first two years of the baby’s life… with the Cake Smash done around the baby’s first birthday.

    AND ENJOY…

As a mum myself, I know what a whirlwind of emotions and events your first year as a parent is… and I also know how incredible and amazing some moments are.

Those are memories you will keep with you forever, regardless of how you choose to celebrate your baby’s first birthday.

And if you want to know more about how I can help you capture some of those moments with a Cake Smash or a Family Photoshoot, get in touch!

      Gender Reveal

      Gender Reveal

Gender reveal – yes or no?

Lincolnshire mums share their gender reveal experiences

Pregnancy is such a magical time full ot joy, excitement and wonder? What will my baby look like? l how much will my baby weigh? Will I have a boy or a girl? All questions that went through my mind a hundred times.

I asked members of my facebook community if they found out the gender of their babies and the reasons why and how they did a gender reveal. Here is what I learnt.

      newborn photography in Stamford
      peterborough newborn photography

Most people who choose to not have a gender reveal did so because they wanted a surprise.  It seems most people choose to find out if they are team pink or blue so even the midwife’s get excited if the parents don’t know babies gender. Doing the gender reveal is an exciting part of the birth for the medical team.

      Twins

Parents that chose to find out the gender of their babies, did so for a few different reasons. Some parents choose to have a gender reveal simple because they were excited and impatient.  Some families wanted to know so they could plan names or buy gender specific clothes. But my favourite reason for having a gender reveal was for helping big brother/sister to bond with their new sibling.

Baby photography, baby with sibling by Boston Photographer

Over recent years there has been a rise in having a gender reveal party to announce the gender of baby. This can be done as an announcement to friends & family or as a way of revealing to mum and dad and older siblings too.

During  my discussions on facebook it came to light that medical professionals within the nhs may refuse to write the gender down or tell anyone other than mum the information so if a gender reveal party is your plan then you may need to book a private gender scan.

I have seen lots of fun ways to carry out the big gender reveal from coloured cakes to piñatas to smoke bombs. All giving a great colour explosion and a fab element of fun to the occasion.

Have you had a gender reveal party. I would love to hear your stories so please leave a comment below or drop me a message.

        Top tips for new Mums

        Top tips for new Mums

        Top tips for new Mums

Lincolnshire Mums offer their top tips for new Mums

Becoming a Mum for the first time is the scariest yet most amazing experience ever.  I asked some of my clients what tips and advice they would give to ladies embarking on motherhood. Here is what they said:

        birth announcement newborn photo

        1) Accept that the concepts of time, day/night and routine don’t exist for a while and that’s OK.

        2) The internet is EVIL and you should never research anything, especially during a 2am feed!! I love this tip.  It is all too easy to go into a whirlwind of panic when you google your baby’s symptoms online.  The best advice I can give is if your concerned pick up the phone to your Dr or out of hours service and speak to a professional.  No worry is too small to get checked out.

        3) Trust yourself and only take on board the advice you feel comfortable with. You know your baby, or at least you will once things calm down a bit.

        peterborough newborn photography

        4) Breastfeeding is hard, ask for help! Even if it’s 2am don’t worry that it’s you think its a stupid question and you should know how to do it!  It’s hard and doesn’t come naturally.

        5) It’s ok to not get out the house for 3 months. It’s ok to not get out of the house before 11am EVER!! Just stay home for a few weeks and enjoy your little bundle.  Do not feel bad about doing nothing but care for and nurture them.  The time is so precious and they start growing immediately there is no pause button.

        6) Don’t compare your child to others. Everyone will do it in their own time.

        baby photography in Spalding

        7) Go with the flow, Babies don’t come with an instruction manual and what works for one baby won’t work for others.  Every baby that comes through my photography studio doors responds to different calming techniques and each one likes some poses and not others. Work out what works with your baby and don’t worry about what works for someone elses.

        8) Accept all offers of help. You’re not super woman and being a mum can be tough and draining. You’ll be a better parent for taking help and having some time for yourself.

        9) Sleep when baby sleeps! It doesn’t matter that there are dishes in the sink and you haven’t had time for a shower.  You need to snatch every opportunity to rest, especially in the early days.

        10) Remember that no one is perfect and everyone has their own way of doing things.

Baby photography, baby with sibling by Boston Photographer

And last, but not least from a Mum of 2 (who are fast approaching their teenage years). Enjoy every minute! Make wonderful memories together and capture the moments with pictures and video.  They grow up way to quickly and before you know it they won’t want that late night cuddle or want you to walk them to school, they’ll be too busy face timing their friends or planning sleepovers.  Make time to relax and enjoy the little things.

Have you got some top tips that you would like to share with new mums, why not add them to the comments section for my readers to benefit from.

          Mummy and Me activities

          Mummy and Me activities

Lincolnshire Mums offer their top Mummy and Me activities

In a world where we are with our children 24 / 7. Being Mum, teacher and Friend all at the same time, sharing quality proper bonding time has become a challenge.  We are so caught up in ‘surviving’ the pandemic it is really difficult to find the time for the important task of living.  I asked some of my clients what lockdown activities they and their children have enjoyed together.  Here are the Top 5 Mummy and Me activity suggestions:

          Mummy and Me photoshoot

          1) Top of the list and reccommended by everybody was Cooking!   Weather it be preparing meals together or baking cakes you can’t go wrong!  Kids love to help in the kitchen so it’s always a winner!  The most recent creation in our house was an amazing Mini Egg Cookie Cake!

          2) The second most popular suggestion was Arts and Crafts.  This can work well with any age.  Simple activities of sticking of finger painting for little ones right through to DIamond Art for older kids!  We currently have diamond Art on the go here and I have to say I am really enjoying it!  Can you guess what mine is going to be?

          peterborough newborn photography

          3) How about a Scavanger Hunt walk?  Creat a list of things to find and head out for a fun filled walk hunting for things.  If your children are older Geocaching is a great scavanger hunt style App that is really good fun.

          4) Den building was one of my favourite activities to do as a child and I loved it even more when my Dad and brothers joined in.  A giant blanket fort in garden or the living room would be awesome.  Add popcorn and a film for a movie night with a difference.

          5) Sewing was popular with my children when they were younger.  We spent hours making blankets, cushions and clothes for their dolls!  In fact talking about it is making me think it’s time to dust of the sewing machine again!  Wonder what creation I can come up with.

Being in a national Lockdown might restrict our choices for Mummy and Me activities but what is important is remembering to take time out from the challanges that life bring.  Spend time having fun and enjoying our children.  Being together, laughing, chatting and smiling and making priceless memories they will never forget.

And lastly make time to relax and enjoy the little things   From a Mum of 2 teenagers . Enjoy every minute! Make wonderful memories together and capture the moments with pictures and video. Sadly they grow up way to quickly and before you know they will be baking on their own and building dens won’t be cool so enjoy the fun times why you can.

Have you done some fun lockdown Mummy and Me activities with your little ones, why not add them to the comments section for my readers to benefit from.
