Photography Studio 2020 review

Photography Studio 2020 review

Photography studio – 2020 a year like now other!

When I started to think about writing my photography studio 2020 review my heart sank!   How was I going to be able write something positve and uplifiting?  But actually once I started to prepare my material I realised that 2020 had been pretty spectacular for my photography studio.  The year like no other has forced me to think outside the box and push my boundaires like never before.

2020 newborn photography collage

Despite my photography studio being closed for over 4 months of the year I have been able to photograph lots of adorable new babies.  The first Lockdown back in March meant that by the time some of the babies were able to visit the photography studio they were as old as 10 weeks.  Prior to 2020 this would have sent me into a wave of panic but the reality proved to be much easier than I imagined and I was able to still create stunning baby photos despite them being less interested in sleep then I was used to.

Being closed for 12 weeks was a very challenging experience and I know I am not alone in the financial worry that this caused.  Creating the wonderful digital creations via photos taken by my clients gave me a little income and gave me something to keep me busy why my photography studio was closed and trapped at home for days at a time.

Photography Studio Lockdown Project

The lockdown had a massive impact on families and businesses across the world but it also had a massive impact on the funds that chairities recieve.  Many many charitable events were cancelled and so the money raised from these also lost.   I wanted to do something to help them, so in my little corner of Lincolnshire I did my own little Lockdown doorstep project.   As we were only able to leave our homes for exercise I took to walking the local area with my camera and capturing families at their front doors in return for a donation to the Lincolnshire Air Amubulance.   I loved that as well as supporting a local charity the project reflected life in 2020.

During the first lockdown I spent some time in my little photography studio working on some personal projects.  It was nice to be able to work on some things for myself and experiment a little.  Sadly my youngest isn’t always a willing model but my eldest was keen to help and as alway my four legged children were keen to co-operate in return for sausages.

In the absence of squiggy babies to photograph I was also able to finally take time to put together a panel of images for submission to the Guild of Photographers and was delighted to be awarded my qualified status.  I have since started to think about my panel for craftsman and look forward to submitting another panel in the future.

As restrictions started to lift in June and I was able to reopen my photography studio I noticed a shift in enquires. as well as capturing my usual babies, sitters and cake smash clients there was an increase in Family photography enquires.  I guess the change in lifestyle and not being able to visit family had brought home the importance of capturing loved ones and making memories.  It has been a true honour to record so many wonderful families this year and I really hope this trend continues going into 2021.

Finally I would like to say thank you to all of my wonderful clients for trusting me to capture your memories for you. It truely has been a pleasure.  It really is true,  If you do a job you love then you never have to work a day in your life.  I am really blessed to be in such a postion.

I look forward to meeting many more adorable babies and families in 2021, along with seeing lots of familiar faces who have sessions already booked. I do love that you all come back time and time again and I am able to enjoy watching your little ones grow.

Wishing you all a fantastic 2021!

      Baby Photography Models

      baby photography Wisbech

You will have seen that recently I have being putting out requests for a few baby phtoography models so I thought it might be helpful to explain why I sometimes do this and why they are sometimes very specific in the model requests.

When I put out a call for a baby photography model it may be for a few different reasons:

Baby Photography models are ideal for launching a new photoshoot.

I may put out a request for a baby model to test out a new package idea.  As was the case with the group of images below.  I wanted to introduce a  simple newborn photography package and needed to ensure I could create the images within the time frame of a mini session of 1 hour.  The best way for me to be able to practise this was to get in a baby photogrpahy model and test out my ideas.

Sometimes I get an idea for a themed baby photoshoot in my head and it is important that I test the styling out before releasing it on sale.  These sweet Autumn photoshoots are a great example of that.  Practising with a baby photography model enabled me to ensure that I could offer a variety of images to create a mini gallery.

      Testing new styling or props

I may put in a request for a baby photography model so I can experiment with ideas for set designs.  It really would be unfair of me to dive straight in with a new idea with a paying client and it not work out.  So the best thing to do is get a baby photography model into the studio and try the ideas I visalise.  Below are some examples when I wanted to test out using real sunflowers within a newborn photoshoot.  Sunflowers are my absoulate favourite flower and I loved experiementing with different set ups.   A number of the images below will definately be amongst my competition entries next year.

The 3 images below were created using a baby photography model specfically to allow me to test out a new outift.  I purchased the gorgous bear outfit and asked the prop supplier, Dream Oliva if she was able to make a bear for baby to hold.  At the time it was not something she offered but agreed to make one and send it to me for free to trial for her.  It was important that the subsequent images could be shared with her so a baby photography model was the perfect way to ensure this could happen.  Within the set of images below is a composition image of baby on a shelf.   Again this was done during a baby model call to allow me to practice getting the posing correct.

      Practise

I like to use baby photography models as an opportunity to practice and fine tune my skills.  Removing the pressure of needing to capture a full gallery of images for a client allows me to spend a little time experiementing with positions and angles and tweeking poses.  This fine tuning can then later be transfered into regular sessions and leads to improvements in the images my clients receive.

Baby Photography models are ideal for marketing needs

I may put out a request for a baby photography model to allow me to capture one specfic image.    I wanted to update some of my wall art samples in the studio and specfically wanted a picture of a little sitter in a bear outfit for a stunning deep framed canvas.   Whilst I may get the image I want during a regular client session there is no guarentee that parents will consent to me using their child’s image for marketing purposes.  Baby photography model calls are required to sign a release to allow me to use the images for my personal use and so sometimes it is quicker to put a call out than wait for the right image during a standard baby photoshoot.

So you can see there are lots of reasons I may put out a request for a baby photography model and sometimes they need to be specfic.  All of my models recieve a selection of the images created via digital download as a thank you for helping me out so it’s great for them too.  If you think you would like to help in the future then please follow my Facebook page as baby photography model requests are always advertised there.

How to choose a Newborn Photographer?

How to choose a Newborn Photographer?

How to choose a Newborn Photographer?

Are your pregnant or have a new little addition to your family?  Many congratulations on your little miracle. Newborns grow and change at an alarming rate and before you know it your beautiful baby has become a smelly, moody, teenager. My own little miracles are teenagers now  and it’s hard to remember those tiny toes and fingers.  I didn’t know about booking a specialist Newborn Photographer back then but I am so thankful for the wonderful baby photos I have of my tiny baby girls.

Whist your newborn is still tiny you will be so wrapped up in the whirlwind of those early days, running on adrenaline, sleep deprived, with a constant stream of visitors. It is so easy for your little one to change and you not notice until it’s too late and your newborn has become more alert and that sleepy curled up baby has gone forever. If you make time for one thing I would strongly recommend looking at baby photographers in Lincolnshire and booking a newborn photoshoot when you are around 20 weeks pregnant to ensure you secure a space.  Here are my top tips for things to look for when researching newborn photographers in your area.

Look for newborn photographer who is specially trained.

Some of the poses you see in the beautiful images we all coo over requires specialist skills to ensure that your precious baby remains safe at all times, so please research your choices carefully.  Make sure the newborn photographer you choose has had some specialist training.  Whilst there are no formal qualifications or governing body for phtoographers many of us are members of associations and undertake regular training to ensure we are skilled and safe within our posing.

What style of Newborn photography do you want?

You might choose a mobile photographer so you can remain in the comfort of your home or prefer a photography studio where a range of props and backdrops are available for you to choose from.  Maybe you want more lifestyle photography type images where baby is captured during natural interaction with you or you love the wonderful posed images that capture sleepy babies all curled up. Whatever your preference there is a newborn photographer nearby that will be perfect for you.  When doing your research ask about their style and ensure it is consistant with what you want from your Newborn photographer.  Pick a photographer who’s work you love.

What kind of packages and products do they offer?

When considering your choice of newborn photographers think about what products you would like at the end?  Some photographers only offer images on USB and you need to get them printed yourself others will offer Frames and stunning wall art products that will be proudly displayed in your home for years to come.  Make sure you ask what your options are.

I hope my tips on how to choose a newborn photographer has been useful.  If you have any questions or would love to chat about booking your baby session with me then please drop me a message or give me a call.

I look forward to welcoming you soon.

            Qualified photographer

            Qualified photographer

            Qualified Photographer finally!

I did it!  I’m a qualified photographer at last!  This last few months has been a strange time for all of us.  Many people have completed household DIY tasks that needed finishing, tended to their garden or decluttered their homes.  I did none of those things.  I spent a lot of the time on a journey of self discovery, thinking about my life, who I am and where I want to go!  I spent time falling back in love with photography for me!  Whilst I love my job I rarely photograph for myself anymore so I spent time capturing things I love,  photographing the sunrise and sunset, my children, my furry family members and generally perfecting my craft.

I learnt many things about myself and where I want to be in 10 years time, and one thing is certain I always want to be able to be a family photographer. I want to always capture your family memories and create art for your family homes, I always want to be a baby photographer, working with new parents to capture this fleeting moment in time.    During my 6 and a half years in business I have undertaken many training courses and learnt new skills regularly ensuring that I can be the best photographer I can be however until now I have never done anything to gain formal recognistion of my skill.

As part of my journey of self discovery I decided that this was something I could rectify whilst being unable to work!    As a member of The Guild of Photographers I am able to work towards 3 levels of recognition, Qualified, Craftman and Master craftman.  Each level is broken down into 4 different catagories so you can gain recognition in your chosen field, for me The guild of Newborn and Baby Photographers was the obvious choice.

I knew from the monthly competition that I enter and regularly win awards through and via the mentoring scheme I am apart of that I had lots of work in my portfolio that is of the required level so I just needed to dig deep and find the confidence to believe in my ability and compile a panel.

In order to gain recognitiion as a Qualified member of the Guild of Baby and Newborn photographers I was required to submit a panel  from 7 different models, 3 images from each creating 21 images in total.    The judges assess the panel based on 12 elements: Impact, Presentation, Technical Excellence, Lighting, Technique, Creativity, Story Telling, Subject Matter, Colour Balance, Composition, Centre of Interest and Style.  So gaining qualification is no easy task.

Selecting images to use was a challange in itself.  One thing that has been important to me throughout my competition career is that the images I submit have been real client images and not images specfically created for the purpose of competition!  It was important to me that the images used within my panel were also all real client images taken during genuine sessions where capturing sufficinet images within a given time frame was one of the many factors influencing my work.

Once I finally selected my 7 models and narrowed it down to 3 images each I had to also submit a supporting statement regarding my photography career and the choice of images selected and then the nervous wait for the verdict began!  The panel of judges meet once a month to assess any panels submitted for Qualification and I was very lucky (more a fluke) that I happened to send mine over only a couple of days prior to the assessment date!  But those 2 days were long enough.

Finally after a long couple of days waiting and then on decision day constantly refreshing my email inbox I received the news!  I had done it,  I was officially a qualified photographer!  Not only that but I recieved No advisories from the judges.  6 and a 1/2 years of hard work and determination and I finally had the recognition as a qualified photographer.   This qualification would not have been possible without all of my clients who grant me permission to share their images in the public domain, so to each and everyone one of you Thank you.  Thank you for allowing me to share you beautiful children with the world, thank you for trusting me and choosing me to be your photographer.

I have no intention of leaving it another 6 1/2 years before submitting a panel for my Craftsman status ,  Work on this has already began! So watch this space.

            Marie
