3 Reasons to book a Christmas Mini Photoshoot

In the last two years we got so used to… well, NOT plan anything in advance, that these days even talking about Christmas in October seems a bit of a stretch.

At the same time, weeks and months seem to pass even faster than before so I know the holidays will be here in the blink of an eye.

And what better than a Christmas mini photoshoot to get in magical, wintery… mood?

If you are still on fence about booking one of these themed photoshoots for your children, here are 5 reasons you should do it… before they sell out!

Christmas Mini photoshoot

1 – THE MAGIC

No, really.

I love Christmas and love how magical this time of the year is for children, so I always put extra effort into making these sessions a memorable experience for the little ones.

From the themed props to the themed Christmassy scenes… everything will be ready for your family, when you come for your session on the 24th October or 6th November 2021 (reserve your slot here www.sliceoflifephotography.co.uk/christmas-mini-photoshoot)

2 – IT’S A QUICK & EASY SESSION

These Christmas photoshoots are perfect for babies (they must be able to sit up unaided) and children, and we know even the most magical… magic trick… doesn’t work forever, when it comes to keeping kids occupied.

That’s why your photoshoot only last 20 minutes: enough time to capture a beautiful gallery of images, but not enough to hear a single “are we done yet??”

3 – YOU ONLY BUY WHAT YOU LOVE

Most parents LOVE the idea of top package, which includes 10 digital images and two special themed composites (the Christmas Window and the Snow Globe) however, packages start at 2 digital images for only £69 – so when it comes to budget and images, you have plenty of options to choose from!

And not just that, our packages are all-inclusive!

You can reserve your appointment for £25 only, which is then deducted in full from your chosen package… easy!

October half term activities in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire

What to do with children this October half term in and around Lincolnshire

October half term is just around the corner.  I always find it a tricky one to fill with activities so I thought it might be helpful to share some of the local attractions to help keep the kids entertained this autumn break. With the help of suggestions from some of my wonderful clients here are a selection of the local attractions you could visit.

    1) October half term includes Haloween this year and after everything being cancelled or scaled down last year we see the return of many Haloween activities.

The fabulous Burghley House in Stamford turns the scuplture garden in to a fun filled ghost trail.  Find the scupulture garden ghosts and solve the clues in the beautiful gardens of Burghley house.  If you attend in fancy dress there is even a sweet treat gift for you 🙂

    2) Tyrells Farm, near Cowbit, Spalding have pick your own pumkins available throughout half term.  It looks like there are a variety of pumpkins to explore and plenty of photo opportunities as well as picking your own pumpkin to take home and carve.  If your stuck for carving techniques you can also grab your Free downlodable templates here.

    3) Keeping with the Pumpkin theme.  Kings Lynn have a fab Pumpkin trail that sounds great for getting out and about.   While your there it is a perfect time to pop in and visit the new Maple Tree Bakes pod!  I hear her wagon wheel cookies are to die for.

    4) The Exotic Pet Refuge just outside market Deeping was a firm favourite with my 2 when they were younger and they are holding a Halloween on 30th October.  A chance to get spooky and support a worthwhile charity too.

    5) This ones not haloween related but great for if the weather is not so welcoming and now my children are older one they are likely to be utilisiing this october holiday.   Inflatanation in Peterborough is a giant inflatable theme park so great for all the family.  Check out their website too for a 15% discount.

    6) Ferry Meadows Country Park – Ferry Meadows is where many of my own childhood memories were made and is somewhere I visit regularly with my own children. There are a range of play areas for children, boat and train rides, walks around the lakes and plenty of open fields to kick a ball or throw a frisbee. There are also lots of picnic areas and BBQ spots that make for a great family picnic. Ferry Meadows also has a water sports centre where older kids can try a spot of wind surfing and canoeing. They often run activities during school holidays so it’s worth checking out their website for more info.

I hope that you have found this article helpful and that you have a spooktastic Half term. Are you planning on visiting anywhere different this holidays? Why not share your top places to visit in the comments for others to share or let me know what you think if you visit any of my recommendations.

Enjoy the half term holiday fun.

      Gender Reveal

      Gender Reveal

Gender reveal – yes or no?

Lincolnshire mums share their gender reveal experiences

Pregnancy is such a magical time full ot joy, excitement and wonder? What will my baby look like? l how much will my baby weigh? Will I have a boy or a girl? All questions that went through my mind a hundred times.

I asked members of my facebook community if they found out the gender of their babies and the reasons why and how they did a gender reveal. Here is what I learnt.

      newborn photography in Stamford
      peterborough newborn photography

Most people who choose to not have a gender reveal did so because they wanted a surprise.  It seems most people choose to find out if they are team pink or blue so even the midwife’s get excited if the parents don’t know babies gender. Doing the gender reveal is an exciting part of the birth for the medical team.

      Twins

Parents that chose to find out the gender of their babies, did so for a few different reasons. Some parents choose to have a gender reveal simple because they were excited and impatient.  Some families wanted to know so they could plan names or buy gender specific clothes. But my favourite reason for having a gender reveal was for helping big brother/sister to bond with their new sibling.

Baby photography, baby with sibling by Boston Photographer

Over recent years there has been a rise in having a gender reveal party to announce the gender of baby. This can be done as an announcement to friends & family or as a way of revealing to mum and dad and older siblings too.

During  my discussions on facebook it came to light that medical professionals within the nhs may refuse to write the gender down or tell anyone other than mum the information so if a gender reveal party is your plan then you may need to book a private gender scan.

I have seen lots of fun ways to carry out the big gender reveal from coloured cakes to piñatas to smoke bombs. All giving a great colour explosion and a fab element of fun to the occasion.

Have you had a gender reveal party. I would love to hear your stories so please leave a comment below or drop me a message.

        Top tips for new Mums

        Top tips for new Mums

        Top tips for new Mums

Lincolnshire Mums offer their top tips for new Mums

Becoming a Mum for the first time is the scariest yet most amazing experience ever.  I asked some of my clients what tips and advice they would give to ladies embarking on motherhood. Here is what they said:

        birth announcement newborn photo

        1) Accept that the concepts of time, day/night and routine don’t exist for a while and that’s OK.

        2) The internet is EVIL and you should never research anything, especially during a 2am feed!! I love this tip.  It is all too easy to go into a whirlwind of panic when you google your baby’s symptoms online.  The best advice I can give is if your concerned pick up the phone to your Dr or out of hours service and speak to a professional.  No worry is too small to get checked out.

        3) Trust yourself and only take on board the advice you feel comfortable with. You know your baby, or at least you will once things calm down a bit.

        peterborough newborn photography

        4) Breastfeeding is hard, ask for help! Even if it’s 2am don’t worry that it’s you think its a stupid question and you should know how to do it!  It’s hard and doesn’t come naturally.

        5) It’s ok to not get out the house for 3 months. It’s ok to not get out of the house before 11am EVER!! Just stay home for a few weeks and enjoy your little bundle.  Do not feel bad about doing nothing but care for and nurture them.  The time is so precious and they start growing immediately there is no pause button.

        6) Don’t compare your child to others. Everyone will do it in their own time.

        baby photography in Spalding

        7) Go with the flow, Babies don’t come with an instruction manual and what works for one baby won’t work for others.  Every baby that comes through my photography studio doors responds to different calming techniques and each one likes some poses and not others. Work out what works with your baby and don’t worry about what works for someone elses.

        8) Accept all offers of help. You’re not super woman and being a mum can be tough and draining. You’ll be a better parent for taking help and having some time for yourself.

        9) Sleep when baby sleeps! It doesn’t matter that there are dishes in the sink and you haven’t had time for a shower.  You need to snatch every opportunity to rest, especially in the early days.

        10) Remember that no one is perfect and everyone has their own way of doing things.

Baby photography, baby with sibling by Boston Photographer

And last, but not least from a Mum of 2 (who are fast approaching their teenage years). Enjoy every minute! Make wonderful memories together and capture the moments with pictures and video.  They grow up way to quickly and before you know it they won’t want that late night cuddle or want you to walk them to school, they’ll be too busy face timing their friends or planning sleepovers.  Make time to relax and enjoy the little things.

Have you got some top tips that you would like to share with new mums, why not add them to the comments section for my readers to benefit from.

          Mummy and Me activities

          Mummy and Me activities

          Mummy and Me activities

Lincolnshire Mums offer their top Mummy and Me activities

In a world where we are with our children 24 / 7. Being Mum, teacher and Friend all at the same time, sharing quality proper bonding time has become a challenge.  We are so caught up in ‘surviving’ the pandemic it is really difficult to find the time for the important task of living.  I asked some of my clients what lockdown activities they and their children have enjoyed together.  Here are the Top 5 Mummy and Me activity suggestions:

          Mummy and Me photoshoot

          1) Top of the list and reccommended by everybody was Cooking!   Weather it be preparing meals together or baking cakes you can’t go wrong!  Kids love to help in the kitchen so it’s always a winner!  The most recent creation in our house was an amazing Mini Egg Cookie Cake!

          2) The second most popular suggestion was Arts and Crafts.  This can work well with any age.  Simple activities of sticking of finger painting for little ones right through to DIamond Art for older kids!  We currently have diamond Art on the go here and I have to say I am really enjoying it!  Can you guess what mine is going to be?

          peterborough newborn photography

          3) How about a Scavanger Hunt walk?  Creat a list of things to find and head out for a fun filled walk hunting for things.  If your children are older Geocaching is a great scavanger hunt style App that is really good fun.

          4) Den building was one of my favourite activities to do as a child and I loved it even more when my Dad and brothers joined in.  A giant blanket fort in garden or the living room would be awesome.  Add popcorn and a film for a movie night with a difference.

          5) Sewing was popular with my children when they were younger.  We spent hours making blankets, cushions and clothes for their dolls!  In fact talking about it is making me think it’s time to dust of the sewing machine again!  Wonder what creation I can come up with.

Being in a national Lockdown might restrict our choices for Mummy and Me activities but what is important is remembering to take time out from the challanges that life bring.  Spend time having fun and enjoying our children.  Being together, laughing, chatting and smiling and making priceless memories they will never forget.

And lastly make time to relax and enjoy the little things   From a Mum of 2 teenagers . Enjoy every minute! Make wonderful memories together and capture the moments with pictures and video. Sadly they grow up way to quickly and before you know they will be baking on their own and building dens won’t be cool so enjoy the fun times why you can.

Have you done some fun lockdown Mummy and Me activities with your little ones, why not add them to the comments section for my readers to benefit from.

            Family Photographs

            Family Photographs

Family Photographs – Why are they important?

Family photographs are such an important part of building confidence in children. Seeimg themselves next to their proud parents builds confidence and reminds them of the love and bond you all share.  Often when parents book a photoshoot they will say ‘just the baby’ or ‘only the children’ and my plea to you all is to get in the photographs with your children.  Enjoy the experience, be present in the moment and exsist in photos.

family photoshoot at Peterborough photography studio

We are great at capturing random selfies and pulling silly faces with our kids, but if you’re anything like me this is all you have, especially us Mums.    I bet as a mother you are always snapping your kids playing with Daddy or grab your camera when you see a moment Daddy and daughter share.  But does your partner do the same with you?  I bet for 90% of Mums the answer is No.  Very few men see things in the same way as us Mums and so it would not cross their mind to grab a snap of a Mummy and Daughter bonding or a Mother and son sharing a cuddle.  For me as a single parent I have not got anyone to capture those moments and all I have is the few professional family photographs we have had taken with another photographer or when I have managed to bribed my children into the studio and taken one with the camera on self timer.

            peterborough newborn photography

This picture above of me and my girls is the last one taken that is not a selfie and it is a year old already.  I can see so many changes in my children.  My youngest has gone from looking like a child to a young lady and we all have new glasses so I definitely need to get an update done.  Lockdown has not been kind to me, my waistline has expanded and my hair hasn’t had a trim for well over a year!  But my kids don’t see those things.  For me it is important to still have photos taken despite being self conscious of these things because I don’t want my children to grow up with body confidence issues.  I wonder what I can bribe them with this time?

The Pandemic and national lockdown restrictions has been a stark reminder of how much our loved ones mean to us and how much we miss them when they are not around.  Family photographs with grandparents and cousins proudly displayed at home have no doubt provided a great topic of conversation, sharing memories of happy times together.

            family portrait autumn photoshoot

I have been extreamely fortunate that I have not lost anyone close to me to Covid, but I did lose my younger brother suddenly 2 years ago so I know all to well the pain and heartache many families are experiencing.  The sudden unexpected devestating loss, not being able to say goodbye or make final memories together brings another level to grief and sometimes guilt too.  I treasure the photos I have of my brother and laugh about the good time we shared.  However there are very few photos in exsistance of us as a family.  I have 4 siblings in total and there are only 3 photos of all of us together, just 3!   2 of these also include my Dad and 1 of them also includes my children.  How is it possible that we only ever got together for 3 photographs?

So my plea to you all is to be present in your photos!  Your children love you just the way you are, lets face it if we wait til we are happy in our skin we will never do it and tomorrow may be to late.

            Marie
