2017 saw slice of life photography undertake 56 newborn photoshoots, 17 cake smash photography sessions, 12 family photoshoots, 11 location photoshoots in the spring bluebells, 6 maternity photoshoots and 21 fine art fairy and elf photoshoots. It really has been an amazing year, but now its time to take a look at 2018.I hope to make this year even better with more themed special photoshoots as well as building on what you love. Here's what's planned so far

Beginners photography training day

Last year saw the introduction of a beginners workshop, teaching attendees the basic skills needed to take their DSLR camera of 'auto'.   The response to the course was overwhelming and I must admit I enjoyed sharing my knowledge with everyone that attended.  I have decided to bring the course back for 1 date only in 2018!  So if you are interesting in learning the basics of exposure, lighting and composition in a fun and practical workshop then pencil 3rd March into your diary.  More details can be found about the course via the Blog article here:   beginners-phtography-training-day

Fairy and Elf Photoshoot Days

2017 saw the introduction of Elves and Mummy Fairies to our popular Fine Art Fairy Photography.  I absolute love creating these magical Fairy Portraits and gain delight from watching the little ones enjoy the magic.  During 2018 I have scheduled 3 Dates for fairy Photoshoots.  18th February, 24th June and 29th September.  Spaces for Fairy Photoshoots are selling fast and I expect will all dates will sell out.  For more information on Fairy Photography please hop over to the information page here:

Bluebell Location Photography

For the last few years I have run Mini sessions in the wonderful Bluebell woodlands.  I love capturing your little ones in the woodlands and hope to capture many more in 2018.  I have decided not to run Mini sessions this year, instead I would encourage to book a regular location Photoshoot during the magical 2 weeks during which the Bluebells are in bloom.  The decision to not run mini sessions is based about my desire to have more time with each family to ensure I can dedicate the time to create personalised family portraits that reflect individual personalities.  The Bluebells are generally Bloom during the 2nd half of April so please book a location Family Photoshoot doing the last 2 weeks to capture your family in this beautiful setting.

Pet Photography

Capturing our beautiful 4 legged friends is something that I would really love to do more of.  Having recently lost one of my own beautiful Labradors it has reminded me of the importance of including our fur babies in family photos.  With this in mind I plan to offer a dedicated studio day for Pets.   This is scheduled for 17th March and more details will follow shortly.

Outdoor Photography

During 2017 I have had the opportunity to create some wonderful outdoor family photography, making use of the wonderful summer and autumn seasons.  This is something I would like to encourage more of during 2018 so if fun natural style photography is your preference then secure a fun outdoor photoshoot during 2018.

Fine Art Portraits

2017 was so busy for me I had limited time to work on personal projects.  During 2018 I would really like to rectify this and as such I plan to work on some styled shoots developing my Fine Art style.  I will be seeking some models for this project so if you are interested in putting your children forward for this please keep your eyes peeled on my Facebook page.

I look forward to welcoming lots of you through the doors of my Spalding based photography studio.  I hope to see lots of regular clients and welcoming many new families though my doors.

Beginners Phtography Training Day Beginners Photography Training Spalding

Did you receive a DSLR camera as a gift this christmas?   Have you owned a camera for a while and never taken it off Auto?   If the answer to either of these is Yes, then this Blog post is for you.

On 3rd March 2018 I will be running my once a year Beginners Guide to DSLR photography.  A one day Photography course to get you started with your camera.  From my Spalding based Photography studio I will teach you the basics of exposure, composition and lighting to help you take control, switch you camera onto manual and produce better photographs as a result.

Had a great day at the photography workshop today. I treated myself and so pleased I set the day aside to develop my skills. I've had my camera for 8 years and never used it beyond auto mode - today has inspired me to get out and experiment more with it.

Thank you Marie

- Vicky

The course will be fun with lots of practical practice with you camera.  With a maximum of 5 trainees there will plenty of opportunity for 1:1 support and time to have individual questions answered.   After lunch we will enjoy a photo walk within my village where you will have the opportunity to seek out photo opportunities and try out your new skills.

Whether you want to take pictures of your children, photos of flowers, your beloved fur baby or great landscape pictures then learning the basics of photography will help you achieve this.

This course is your opportunity to learn from a local award winning professional photographer.   A chance to take your photography to the next level and learn how to use your DSLR camera in all its glory.

I had a really great day with Marie at the workshop she put on. She helped me understand the basics of taking pictures manually with my camera (no more auto for me!) and I hope with some practice to be taking much better pictures. Marie was such a good teacher and so enthusiastic it rubbed off on all of us. I highly recommend attending one of Marie's workshops to help you get the best out of your camera

Lincolnshire Photography Studio 2017 review Photography Studio Lincolnshire

2017 Review

Well what an amazing year I have had at Slice of Life Photography.  A record number of clients have stepped through the doors, I have relocated the studio close to Spalding in Lincolnshire and I continue to love every minute of what I do.  Not every session has been easy, there have challenges along the way.  Children who don't want to co-operate, babies suffering colic or  that don't want to sleep, rain and freezing temperatures to battle on wedding days, but the end result has always been worth the persistence and determination.   I absolutely love creating beautiful newborn photos for you to treasure, capturing you little ones birthday with a cake smash photoshoot and transforming your little ones into timeless fairies and elves.   Here are the highlights from the most amazing year to date.

Newborn Photography

I have had the pleasure of recording the arrival of 54 newborn babies this year.  Capturing their early days with timeless beautiful baby photos in my Lincolnshire Photography studio.   Some babies have slept through their newborn photoshoot and others have watched me intently and been far to interested in what I've been doing to close their eyes but each and everyone has been a wonderful precious gift and a delight to photograph.

Little Sitters

A few of my newborn's have returned for the little sitter part of their Milestones Photography package and other Little sitters have visited for the first time.  I love to capture sitting babies as it is a great opportunity to capture their emerging personalities as they start to see the world for a different vantage point.

Cake Smash Photoshoots

Cake smash photoshoots are a great way to record your baby turning one.  As well as 16 1st birthdays this year, I have also captured my first 2nd birthday and mustn't forget capturing my own cheeky 11 year old as well.  A fun photoshoot for any age.

Bluebell Mini Photoshoots

The Spring time is one of my favourite times of year to get outside and create some wonderful family memories during location photoshoots.  This year 11 families joined me for sessions in the wonderful Bluebell wonderlands.  The beautiful purple flowers making a wonderful setting for outdoor photography sessions and mark the start of spring for me.

Family Photoshoots

I have seen a rise in families visiting this year with 12 families joining me either in the studio or on location for an outdoor family photoshoot.  It is lovely to be able to capture the whole family together, its so important to have pictures with Mummy and Daddy in too.

Maternity Photography

Bump Photoshoots are so precious.  An opportunity to document your pregnancy and the life growing inside of you.  6 Mummy's have stepped into the studio to document their amazing bodies this year, all glowing in the beauty of pregnancy.

Fairy Photography

This year has seen my Fairy Photography grow massively, with the introduction of Elves and Fairy outfits for Mummies.   Fairy Photoshoots are held on limited dates throughout the year and every date sold out during 2017!  2018 fairy dates are already booking up and I can not wait to create more magical Fine Art Fairy Portraits for you all.

Pet Photography

Pet Photography is an area I hope to expand during 2018.  Capturing our 4 legged family members is so important.  As I write this I am preparing to let my own fur baby go to sleep forever and it breaks my heart that she will no longer be here to greet you all, but I take comfort in the many amazing portraits I have of her.   Riley is the 1 fur baby that visited in 2017 and he was a dream to photograph.  Watch this space for details of Pet Portrait Days coming in 2018.

Christmas Photoshoots

Christmas is such a fun magical time and it is lovely to document the magic through photography.  Many clients chose to document their little ones every christmas as it is a great gift to share with family and document how they have grown each year.

Engagement and Wedding Photography

My 2017 journey in wedding photography will follow in a separate article, after I have completed the final 2017 wedding collection.  Just one couple chose to include a pre wedding engagement shoot in their wedding package this year and together we chose to take advantage of the beautiful Bluebells to document this.  I hope that more couples will add an engagement photoshoot to their wedding packages during the 2018 and 2019 wedding seasons.  It is so wonderful to capture couples so much in love and allows us to work together ahead of the pressures of a busy wedding day.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy new year and  to thank each and everyone of  you for the 134 sessions, 5 weddings, 1 prom and one Charity Ball that I have had the privilege of documenting throughout 2017.  Here is to an amazing 2018 x

Why should I book Slice of Life Photography? Spalding Photography Studio

What am I paying for?

I just wanted to write a quick post about what goes into a photoshoot at Slice of Life Photography.  Just like within any industry there are many price brackets for the same product, and photography is no different, however it is not uncommon for me to hear the words, 'you're too expensive', and this is absolutely fine as I don't expect every enquiry to turn into a booking, but I want clients and potential clients to understand what is involved within a Newborn photography session, what happens behind the scenes before I press the shutter for your cake smash photoshoot and to understand the time and skill that goes into editing your Fairy Photos.  I pride myself in offering a unique and personal service to all my clients and hope that it is this that sets me apart from my competitors and is the reason that my clients choose me.  Whilst this blog article isn't about justifying what I charge I hope it helps you to understand that the unique images created during your baby photoshoot, cake smash session or even as part of your wedding photography package are not a simple 'click of the button',

So let me outline some of the essential elements to running my Spalding photography studio.

My purpose built garden studio offers a home from home experience and I hope ensures a relaxing and enjoyable environment for your photography session.  Whilst I like to try and maintain business hours to ensure a work life balance, working from home does mean that I can offer a little more flexibility to my clients.  I appreciate that many of you work 9 - 5 and so it is not uncommon for me to make myself available for clients to collect orders out of hours on the way home from work or at weekends.

home studio for spalding photographerSpalding photography studios

It is important to me that  my props are updated and replaced regularly to ensure that the images that I create for my clients are personal and unique to them.  My wonderful studio space has been kitted out with a range of props and outfits, some of them unique and handmade by me.  I pride myself in offering variety and choice to my clients and I want them to walk away with memories and images that are special to them and not just the same as the next person's.

Cake smash photoshoots are styled to individual clients preferences.  If I client requests a set up I haven't created before then a new outfit is purchased and items linked to the theme are brought, this may include bunting or more specific items (like carrots for a recent Peter rabbit themed session or a Unicorn headband).  In addition to these one of expenses every cake smash photoshoot includes the cost of the cake which is made by a professional baker, styled to your chosen theme.  In order to ensure I maintain a high standard of hygiene all cake smash sessions are photographed on a paper back drop which is thrown away after the session.  Outfits and towels etc are also washed and the studio cleaned after every session to maintain the high hygiene levels important when working with young children.

During a newborn photography session many wraps and blankets are used, some get pooped on, some peed on but regardless each and every blanket and outfit that is used during a newborn photoshoot is washed and dried prior to being used with another baby.  If my clients have a specific colour or image in mind for their session I go out of my way to source the necessary items to create the image.  I am currently designing a prop for an upcoming newborn session as a surprise for my client.  The time and love that I have put into creating this unique item is because I love what I do and I want my clients to have the perfect images for them.   I'm sure there will be a blog post to follow on this after the big reveal.

Insurance provides cover and peace of mind to both myself and my clients that should the worst happen, everyone concerned is fully protected.  This is particularly important within my work as a wedding photographer or a newborn photographer where should a memory card become corrupt and the files lost a simple reshoot isn't an option.  It ensures that should my equipment become damaged I will able to get the items repaired or replaced without delay.   My insurance has proved invaluable already.  When my camera was dropped during a wedding in November 2015,  It was repaired and back to me within 10 working days, In time for the next wedding I had booked.

Camera's, Lens, Lighting, and Computers are some of the many pieces of equipment essential to my job.   Aside from the initial outlay for these, they don't last forever and need to be replaced frequently.  It is also paramount to me that I have back up equipment available should a failure  happen during a photo shoot.  I would much rather grab my spare camera than stop the session.

I want to be able to provide the best service possible to my clients, this means regular training to develop my photography and business skills.  Previously I have undertaken Newborn Photography training with some of the worlds leading photographers, I have undertaken training in Newborn Safety, and specialist training to allow me to create stunning fine art Fairy Portraits and in 2018 I will be completing further training including baby first aid.  I hope that this ongoing training provides my clients with the peace of mind that they and their children are in safe hands and that the images I create for them are of the highest possible standard.  I am also a member of The Guild of Photographers and BANPAS, these professional bodies support me to continue to provide a high standard of professional service.

before and after of newborn photography edit, Boston photography studioBoston Photographers

The process of editing is time consuming and this is factored into the overall cost of your photography session.  All images are retouched to a high standard, removing blemishes and correcting skin tones etc takes time and patience.  It is important to me that your images are finished to a high standard and so a lot of care and attention goes into each individual image.  All images within the final gallery are fully retouched prior to your personal viewing and ordering appointment.   Whilst this means that there is a two week wait for your viewing appointment, it also means that you can see exactly what the final image looks like rather than trust that my editing will match what you visualise.

Before and after Fine art fairy edit, Photographer near BostonPhotographer near Boston

Recently a few clients have asked why I stopped on-line galleries for viewing and ordering.   There are two main reasons behind this.  Firstly, I want you to see the images exactly as they will appear in print.  Every screen, TV or monitor has a different colour tone and this means that what you view on your computer at home may not be what appears in print.  The screen that images are viewed on in the studio matches the colour tones of the professional printing lab that supplies your final prints, so by viewing your gallery within the studio you can see exactly how they will appear in print.   It is also important to me that I am able to offer you support and guidance in making your final order selections.   I do not run your ordering appointment with a 'pushy sales pitch', I simply provide input on what would work well in terms of crop, size etc based the images you have selected and our discussions surrounding you personal home decor and style.

Stunning framed canvas supplied by Spalding PhotographerPhotography studios Spalding

Your prints and products are sourced from high quality professional printing labs.  Yes you can get items printed on the high street for a lower cost, but my products are designed to be displayed for many years and survive the test of time and so the quality and standard of production reflects this.    Digital images are a purchase option for those clients that which to source their own products.

I hope that this article goes some way to demonstrating the care, love and attention that I put into providing the best possible service to my clients.  I want each and every one of you to choose me for my unique personal style and to love every image that I create for you.  Photography and creating timeless memories are my passion and I want this to shine through in the service that I offer to you all.

Top tips for your Newborn Photoshoot Top Tips for your your Newborn Photography Session

Spalding Photography Studio

baby on bum up pose on curved stool by Slice of Life Photography, specialist newborn photographer HolbeachSpecialist newborn photographer in Peterborough

Congratulations on booking your newborn photoshoot with Slice of Life Photography.  I am very much looking forward to meeting you and capturing some precious timeless baby photos for you and your family to treasure.   In order to ensure your newborn photography session runs as smoothly as possible here are some top tips to help you prepare for your babies photoshoot.

Keep me informed

Please let me know as soon as possible after baby has arrived so that we can confirm a date for your newborn photoshoot. Baby Photography Sessions are best carried out within the first 14 days.  After 2 weeks they start to stretch out and stay awake for longer periods so it is more difficult to encourage the deep sleep required to capture the curled up poses you will have seen on my website.

Sleeping baby girl holding a rose by Baby Photographer near Kings LynnKings Lynn Baby Photography Studio

A well fed baby is a happy baby.  With this in mind, I ask that you come prepared to feed baby on arrival and top up on demand throughout the newborn photoshoot.  Having a full belly will help your baby fall into a nice deep sleep, you will hear me refer to this as being milk drunk, and a nice deep sleep means the session will progress quicker and more calmly for baby.

Although it is possible to create some beautiful images while your baby is awake and alert, the styled curled up posed images displayed throughout my website require baby to be sound asleep.   In order to facilitate this, I ask that where possible please try to keep your baby awake in the couple of hours leading up to the session.

black and white newborn baby image by slice of life photography, spalding photography studionewborn photo shoot

Babies are unable to regulate their own body temperature and they will be naked or lightly clothed for the majority of their baby photoshoot so the studio will be very warm during the session.   If your not sweating it probably isn't warm enough for baby, so come prepared with layered clothing so you can remove layers and cool off.  Its also sensible to bring a change of clothing as we all know accidents happen and I'd hate for you to have to travel home in yellow poop stained clothing.

Plain, neutral clothing works well for family photos so please consider this when choosing your outfit.  You may find my blog post on What to wear for you photoshoot a useful point of reference.  Please bring baby in loose fitting, easy to remove clothing,  this will achieve two things.  Firstly, It will reduce the chances of seam, elastic marks on babies skin and secondly if baby arrives at the studio fast asleep the session will be able to get underway without waking baby.  If baby arrives in clothes that are fiddly to remove the chance of waking them whilst undressing them are much higher.

big sister, pushing newborn girl in victorian pram by Slice of Life Photography, Stamford Photographerbaby and family photographer, Peterborough

Newborn photoshoots last on average of 3 hours but be prepared to be here up to 4 hours.  With this in mind I try to schedule sessions to start at around 10am.  Be sure to have a filling breakfast and bring snacks with you.  Bottled water will be available at the photography studio.

What about big brother or sister?

Newborn photography sessions can include family photos if desired, however as already mention the studio gets very warm and sessions are long.  With this in mind I don't recommend that siblings remain for the whole session.  We will discuss if family photos are completed at the beginning or the end of the session and siblings can join us for the first or last hour to allow them to be included.

Beautiful mummy and baby parent photograph by Slice of Life Photography, specialist newborn photographer, LincolnPhotography studio in Spalding

Bring a dummy

I understand that many Mum's try to avoid using a dummy, especially if you are trying to establish a positive breastfeeding routine.  However, please consider bringing a dummy to the session, even if it is the only time it is used.  Having a dummy to hand can help to settle baby into poses quicker and more calmly, making the newborn photoshoot a more relaxed enjoyable session for everyone.

When you arrive at my Spalding Photography studio I will chat with you about your baby, your delivery experience and what you would like from your newborn photoshoot.  It is helpful to think about this ahead of time.  Do you have any colours or props in mind?  Feel free to browse the images on my website and make a note of any images that you particularly like.  Sessions are very much led by how baby responds to posing and although not every baby will be happy to be posed in certain ways I will always try to accommodate any special requests.

baby in dads arms black and white image, newborn photo studio Stamfordnewborn photo studio Peterborough

During your newborn photography session I will take the lead and provide baby with much of the required care.  This helps to keep baby calm and reduces the risk of baby becoming distracted by the smell of Mum's milk.  There will be times throughout the session I will call on Mum or Dad to assist as a spotter to help ensure baby is safe at all times, however the rest of the time you will be able to sit back, enjoy a little down time and relax.

If you have any questions ahead of your newborn photography session, please don't hesitate to drop me a message or give me a call and i'll be happy to help.  I look forward to welcoming you and your new baby soon.

What to wear for your Photoshoot Studio Photoshoot - Clothing Ideas

Many factors are important when creating the perfect photograph.  Lighting, posing, facial expressions and clothing all play an important part.  If one element is off balance the result can be that the final image doesn't look right.  Your photographer will work with you to ensure that most of these factors are set to create the perfect family portrait, however clothing is something you will need to consider in advance of your photoshoot.  Whether it is a family portrait, photos of the children or a maternity photoshoot what you wear is an important factor, so below are some top tips from me to help you plan your outfits.

Beach sunset photoshoot with sisters, Stamford PhotographerStamford Photography studio 1.  Co-ordinate Outfits

It is important to ensure that what each person participating in the photoshoot blends together well.   This doesn't mean everyone should wear exactly the same colours and tones but it does mean that you should compliment one another.

2.  Simplicity is best

Photographers want to emphasis your faces and emotion and wearing plain clothing helps to avoid distractions within the photographs.  Logo's and patterns can draw attention away from you and your family.   Sweet little boy sitting on log, Lincoln photographerLincoln Photography studio

3.  Be Timeless

Try to avoid wearing clothing that represents the latest fashion.  Timeless clothing such as jeans, or a classic style will still look good displayed in your home in years to come.

4.  Dress for the time of year

This is particularly important if you have opted for an outdoor photoshoot.  You want your images to make sense so consider where you are having your photos taken and dress appropriately for the location and time of year.   outdoor photoshoot in hay bales, Boston PhotographerKings Lynn Photography studio

5.  Use accessories to show your personalities

It is important that the portraits created show your personalities and style, so use simple accessories to do this without over powering the finished look.  A pretty hair bow, soft scarf or funky shoes can all bring out your personality without distracting from the co-ordinated look.  Beautiful mummy to be, maternity photographer PeterboroughPeterborough photography studio

6.  Wear layers and textures

Wearing textures and layers can add depth and interest to a photograph whilst maintaining the co-ordinatored colours.  Linen, Lace, and cord can compliment one another whilst helping to separate individuals.

7. Shoes matter

Don't forget to think about your footwear.  If you are in the studio it maybe that your photographer will ask you to go barefoot but for outdoor photoshoots your footwear can make or break an outfit.

Fine art portrait Spalding photographerSpalding photography studio 8.  Be comfortable

This is especially important for young children.  You don't want them in an outfit that they don't like or find irritating.  The likely outcome is they will be fidgety and tugging at their clothes during their photoshoot.

9.  Don't forget hair and make-up

Your make-up should be subtle and natural and compliment your chosen clothing.   It is important that your hairstyle is representative of you, but it is also helpful to try and avoid your hair falling across your face to avoid distracting shadows and hair falling into the eyes.   fine art portrait of 2 brothers, Boston photographerBoston photography studio 10.  Consider your home decor

This may sound like a strange thing to consider but you want your pictures to compliment your home, particularly if you are planning on displaying a wonderful piece of large wall art.

I hope that you have found this helpful in planning the perfect outfit for your photoshoot.  Your photographer will be the perfect person to chat to about styling ideas if you want further advice.  At my photography studio near Spalding, Lincolnshire I have a range of outfits for many photo shoot styles so it is always worth asking as it maybe that outfits can be provided for all or some members of the family.

1.  If you are having your hair and bridal makeup done at home, consider carefully the room that you choose for this.    A bright and airy room will allow the best light for the MUA and photographer to work in.  Ideally be seated close to a window but not with your back or front directly facing the it.

Bridal Preparation Wedding Picture Orton Hall PeterboroughBridal Preparation Wedding Picture Orton Hall Peterborough

2.  Ensure work surfaces are clutter free and tidy.  Whilst your photographer will move distracting items during shots that are set up and staged, this is not possible while capturing natural shots, as they happen so ensuring the area is clean and tidy ahead of the day will help to prevent your final images from having distracting items within them.

bride getting ready cropland abbey weddingbride getting ready cropland abbey wedding

3.  If you have space, hang your dress somewhere nice (consider the hanger too) before you are ready to put it on. The photographer can get shots of the bridal preparations with the dress in the background. This will help to tell the story and gives context to the photos.

4.  Generally the photographer will want to photograph dresses, shoes, jewellery, perfume, button holes, bouquet, garter and rings (if they are at the location).  Ensure you have gathered all the items your photographer will want for detail shots ahead of their arrival.  This will mean they are not interrupting you while you are getting ready asking for key items.

5.  My full day packages include Bridal preparation as standard.  As the boys usually get ready elsewhere this gets over looked.  Consider booking a package that includes a 2nd photographer to allow goomsman preparation to be captured too.

Groomsman wedding picture norfolkGroomsman wedding picture norfolkIt seems buttonholes cause the groomsman so much trouble wedding photo Market deepingwedding photo Market deepingThe groomsman head from the pub to the church to meet the guests as they arrive

6.  Lots of Brides get into their dress at the last minute, but if time allows its helpful to be ready 20 minutes or so before your car is due to depart.  This allows a little time for you to gather your thoughts and time for your photographer to capture some lovely photos of the girls all dressed up.  If you intend to have these photos in your garden then ensure the garden is clean and tidy too.

7.  On your wedding day, everything will take longer than you think, from getting your hair done to getting dressed. And mishaps will happen (trust me!) -- from misplaced vows to terrible traffic -- so set a strict schedule that leaves extra time to deal with delays without cutting into your photography session.

Bride and groom sitting in the grounds of Orton Hall Hotel Peterborough by Slice of Life Photographywedding photo outside Orton Hall Hotel

8.  Remember to keep your head up and look forward during key moments, such as walking down the isle or during confetti throwing.   The emotion on your face during these moments will add to the memories and story telling element of your wedding album.

Bride and groom wiping tears during the wedding ceremony, Lincoln, by Slice of Life PhotographyBride and Groom crying Church wedding Photography Confetti Bomb BourneChurch wedding Photography Confetti Bomb Bourne

9.  It is important to discuss a list of key shots with your photographer.  I always plan a meeting with my Bride and Groom a few weeks ahead of the big day to discuss this.  If there are key moments you want captured make sure they know.  For example many brides want a picture of their Dad's reaction when he sees her in the dress for the first time.   Try to keep the list of formal group shots to under 10.  Although these photos are important, neither you nor your guests will want to stand around for ages while these are done.  After all everyone is there to celebrate with you.

Father of the bride and family first look, Wedding photographers PeterboroughWedding Photographers Boston

and finally

10.  Just Enjoy the Day.  Try not to worry about the little things, like if it starts to rain or the little page boy refuses to join in the family photo.  Your photographer will take care of it and generally has a trick up their sleeve.  If you are worrying about the little things and watching the camera, it won't capture the moments, you laughing with your friends or sharing a secret look with your new husband / wife.  Let your photographer keep you on schedule and capture the day as it unfolds.

Mr and Mrs Krohnen Wedding Photography story Louth Wedding Storytelling Photography

Mr and Mrs Krohnen

Danni and Ash booked me to be their wedding photographer back in 2016.  They specifically wanted lots of relaxed reportage wedding photos telling the story of their day, so I set about ensuring that I captured lots of moments throughout the day as well as ensuring that more formal parts of the photography were undertaken in a manner that created emotive images showing the love that they clearly share.

As their wedding day neared I started to panic a little as it became apparent that my reliable little car was on its last legs and I worried that it would not make the journey to Louth for their special day!  Not to be deterred and to ensure that I did not encounter hiccups on the wedding day I begged the garage that was supplying my new car to allow me to have it a couple of days early.   All well and good except that collecting the car the day before meant I was still unsure of the controls, this created much amusement for the newly weds when it came to us leaving the church to head to the reception venue.  Whilst they waited in the lovely VW camper van for me to pull away they were highly entertained as I struggled to get my wing mirrors to return to the outward position for driving!

A special mention needs to go to Danni's Mum who made the unique bouquets and also to Dann's Cousin who is an amazing seamstress and made the bridesmaids dresses and Danni's stunning wedding dress.  I wonder how many hours she spend sewing on sequins?

Mr and Mrs Krohnen married at the local church close to their home and enjoyed a fun filled reception at the local golf club.   They were surrounded by wonderful family and friends but, sadly the Groom's best man was unable to make it back from abroad to attend the wedding, however his presence was still evident in the fantastic video speech he was able to provide for his 2nd in command to play.

Danni and Ash truly are a perfect match and I wish them well for a long and happy marriage.  Thank you for choosing me to capture your wedding day.

Newborn Photography Training Day in Spalding, Lincolnshire Newborn Photography Training Day

sweet newborn chin on hands wearing bunny hat by Slice of Life Photography, LincolnBaby photographers in Peterborough

It is so important within any trade to continue to learn and develop, otherwise your work becomes stagnant and outdated. Ongoing training ensure that knowledge and skills are up to date and enable professionals to deliver the best possible service.  Ensuring I am able to provide my clients with amazing photographs of their little ones is so important to me and I want to ensure they feel confident in my abilities to care for their newborn and offer them an amazing experience.  It is for these reasons that I continue to undertake regular training with other photographers.

sweet baby girl sleeping during her baby photo shoot by Slice of Life Photography, StamfordPeterborough based photographers As I have mentioned in previous blogs I under took a number of group training courses to improve my skills within Newborn Photography, Fairy Photoshoots, Outdoor photo sessions and wedding photography during 2016.  This year I chose to invite another photographer to my studio to provide training on a one to one basis.  Claire joined me at the beginning of September (once the craziness of the summer holidays was over) to spend time supporting me to grow within my newborn photography.   Although I have previously trained within this area I wanted to streamline my work and be able to perfect poses further.  Claire is also an expert within Newborn safety so was able to offer further advise and guidance to help me ensure that babies are safe and well cared for during their newborn photoshoot.

Consequently we spent time working on some of the poses I find more challenging and looked at how to still provide a full and varied gallery of newborn photos with babies that do not want to sleep or are not happy in the traditional posing that newborn photography is known for.

sweet baby girl wearing a unicorn bonnet by Slice of Life Photography, Kings LynnPhotographers Peterborough I would like to say a massive thank you to Claire for her amazing support and advise during the course.  I can not wait to attend the training retreat next year to learn more from Claire.   And a extra thank you for bringing the stunning Unicorn bonnet with you.  I have ordered and received my own now and I can not wait to use it.

Christmas winter wonderland at Boston Photography studioSpalding Photogrpahy Studio

Christmas is my absolute favourite time of year.   Watching my children delight in the wonder and magic makes my heart melt.  Christmas Lights, Christmas songs, presents, visits to Santa, and quality family time,  I love it all.   And of course I am right there with my camera capturing the memories.  I am embarking on what is likely to be the final year of my children being believers, so this year I intend to record as much as I can and make it as magically as possible.   Do you have any secret tips to help keep the magic alive?

Christmas themed photoshoot, reading the polar expressBoston Photography studio

I am hoping that I will be lucky enough to secure tickets for the Polar Express this year.  It is one of my favourite Christmas stories so I really hope to enjoy the experience with my little ones before the magic is lost.   Consequently the Polar express has been some of the inspiration behind my Christmas mini sessions this year.  I have incorporated Santa, Pj's, the story, and even the magic bell will put in an appearance.

Whaplode Manor, Lincolnshire 2017 Wedding The wedding of Mr and Mrs Papworth at Whaplode Manor, Near Spalding, Lincolnshire

I first met Chris at a camera club when I started out in photography, we quickly became firm friends and over time he began helping me out assisting at weddings.  Kathryn and Chris have been a couple for as long as I have know Chris and although it was evident that they were a perfect match I never thought he would make an honest woman of her.  So when my Facebook profile popped up with announcements of their engagement just after Christmas this year I was shocked but very delighted for them both.  I knew straight away what venue they would book as 2 years ago Chris had assisted me at a particularly venue and had said 'If I ever get married, this is where I would like it to be', and sure enough only a couple of weeks later Chris called me and asked If I was available to photograph their wedding at Whaplode Manor, near Spalding, Lincolnshire on July 15th.  I don't doubt that Chris and Kathryn had offers from many of our mutual friends to capture their day, so being asked to be their wedding photographer was a real privilege and honour.

The day was truly perfect in every way.  Kathryn got ready at their home surrounded by her children and grandchildren, there was lots of fun and laughter and a wonderful atmosphere while Feroza from Feroza's Artistry worked her magic on everyones hair and makeup.

Kathryn looked truly beautiful as she arrived at Whaplode Manor and Chris scrubbed up pretty well too.   They married surrounded by their nearest and dearest in a beautiful emotional ceremony.  Considering how many weddings I have captured I still get a little chocked up watching people I care about make their promises to one another and the speeches were on another level,  a massive well done to the best man for raising the bar.  I'll let you know when someone tops yours.

Mr and Mrs Papworth thank you for allowing me the honour of capturing your day.

5 great reasons to book a Sitter Photoshoot What is a sitter session?

Photographing babies as they start to sit up and see the world from a new perspective is one of my favourite types of photo shoots.  Sitter sessions are a lovely short photo shoot focusing purely on your growing baby.  Sitter photography sessions are done once baby can sit unaided but ideally before they are crawling, usually between 6 and 9 months.  My Lincolnshire photography studio, close to Spalding has a range of outfits and set ups suitable for babies of all ages, we can discuss styling when you arrive for your session and use colours and props to compliment your home.

Why book a sitter  photo shoot session?

5 Great Reasons to book a sitter Photo shoot.

1. Sitter sessions mark a big milestone in baby's first year of development.  The world looks very different for an upright position.

2. Before you know it your baby will be on the move, crawling and walking and won't sit still long enough for you to grab your camera and capture that smile.

Baby girl sitting with back to viewer with teddies, turning and looking over shoulder, by Slice of Life PhotographyBaby sitting with teddies

3. Sitter sessions really show a babies emerging personality.  I particular love seeing Little sitters that I have captured as a newborn baby.  Seeing how they are growing into a little character always makes me smile.

4. Babies change and develop so much within the first year that capturing them as they develop and grow is an important part of recording their development.

5. Sitter sessions are nice and short.  Unlike your newborn photography session that can last up to 3 hours.  Sitter sessions are 30 - 45 minutes long.   This is perfect for capturing a range of images in different outfits and set ups but short enough that baby doesn't lose interest and get restless.

Mr and Mrs Burrows - Church wedding Photography in Peterborough Mr and Mrs Burrows - Peterborough Wedding

I first met Sandra and Chris 2 years ago whilst photographing Sandra's son's wedding at The great Northern Hotel in Peterborough.  When Sandra called to book she explained that she didn't hesitate to chose me as their wedding photographer as the photographs from her Son's wedding spoke for themselves.   I hesitated for a few moments before taking the booking, but I wasn't going to let a silly thing like turning 40 on the same day stand in the way of doing the job I love.  Capturing people's memories through photography is a true honour and something I love, so I was more than happy to celebrate my 40th Birthday whilst undertaking the task of wedding photographer for Mr and Mrs Burrows.

Chris and Sandra chose their local church in Eye, near Peterborough to take their marriage vows, followed by a wedding reception in the local hall surrounded by family and friends.  Their 4 beautiful grand children were page boys and flower girls and Sandra's son, Dan took the honoured role of walking his Mum down the isle.

It was one of the hottest days of the year but everyone had a fabulous time, I even caught a few guests sneaking to the shops for large tubs of ice cream to enjoy and help them cool off!    It was lovely to see some familiar faces and a truly relaxed and enjoyable day.  A big thank you to Emma from Little Cherubs Photography for assisting and capturing some fantastic candid moments.

Mr and Mrs Burrows, I wish you a life time of happiness, thank you for allowing me to share your day.

Mr and Mrs Dobson - Barnsdale Hall Wedding, Rutland The wedding of Mr and Mrs Dobson

at Barnsadale Hall, Rutland

The 2017 wedding season started of in Style with the wedding of Mr and Mrs Dobson at Barnsdale Hall Hotel in Rutland.  I first met Jade and Steven at a  Peterborough wedding fayre and was delighted when they called to tell me they had chosen me to be their wedding photographer.  They had chosen the beautiful Barnsdale Hall in Rutland for their day and this provided a stunning backdrop for their beautiful wedding photography.  They are a truly lovely down to earth couple and their wedding day was full of fun and laughter.  In keeping with my style Jade and Steven wanted mainly fun, relaxed documentary style wedding photographs that captured the story and emotion of their day, capturing both family and friends enjoying the celebrations.    Despite the heavy rain and showers that intercepted the day everyone had a fantastic time and we were able to make use of the beautiful Rutland water as a backdrop for some formal wedding portraits.

Jade and Steven here is your story.  Thank you for allowing me to capture your day.

Top tips for new Mum's Lincolnshire Mums offer their top tips for new Mums

Becoming a Mum for the first time is the scariest yet most amazing experience ever.  I asked some of my clients what tips and advice they would give to ladies embarking on motherhood.   Here is what they said:

newborn baby girl photograph on lilac backdrop by Slice of Life Photography, BostonBaby photographer

1)  Accept that the concepts of time, day/night and routine don't exist for a while and that's OK.

2)  The internet is EVIL and you should never research anything, especially during a 2am feed!!   I love this tip.  It is all to easy to go into a whirlwind of panic when you google your babies symptoms online.  The best advise I can give is if your concerned pick up the phone to your Dr or out of hours service and speak to a professional.  No worry is to small to get checked out.

3)  Trust yourself and only take on board the advice you feel comfortable with. You know your baby...or at least you will once things calm down a bit.

beautiful baby with bunny hat by Slice of Life Photography, newborn photographer near BostonSpecialist newborn photographer Spalding

4)  Breastfeeding is hard, ask for help! Even if it's 2am don't worry that it's a stupid question and you should know how to do it! It's hard and doesn't come naturally.

5)  It's ok to not get out the house for 3 months. It's ok to not get out of the house before 11am EVER!! Just stay home for a few weeks and enjoy your little bundle. Do not feel bad about doing nothing but care for and nurture them. The time is so precious and they start growing immediately there is no pause button.

6)  Don't compare your child to others. Every one will do it in their own time.

Proud big sister with her newborn baby brother by Slice of Life Photography, StamfordNewborn and sister Stamford photographer

7)  Go with the flow, Babies don't come with an instruction manual and what works for one baby won't work for others.   Every baby that comes through my photography studio doors responds to different calming techniques and each one likes some poses and not others.  Work out what works with your baby and don't worry about what works for someone elses.

8)  Accept all offers of help.  Your not super woman and being a mum can be tough and draining.  Your'll be a better parent for taking help and having some time for yourself.

9)  Sleep when baby sleeps!  It doesn't matter that there are dishes in the sink and you haven't had time for a shower.  You need to snatch every opportunity to rest, especially in the early days.

And last but not least from a Mum of 2 (who are fast approaching their teenage years).  Enjoy every minute!  Make wonderful memories together and capture the moments with pictures and video.  They grow up way to quickly and before you know it they won't want that late night cuddle or want you to walk them to school, they'll be too busy face timing their friends or planning sleepovers.  Make time to relax and enjoy the little things.

Have you got some top tips that you would like to share with new mums, why not add them to the comments section for my readers to benefit from.

New Mum's must haves and must nots! Things Mums can live with and without!

I don't know about you but when I found out I was expecting my first child I spend ages researching baby gadgets and products on the market that were marketed as being able to make my life easier, and I brought most items brand new, spending (and wasting) a small fortune on equipment that I just didn't need.  So here is my guide to Must haves and not haves for those of you currently researching baby purchases.

1)  Muslin cloths will become your new best friend.  They have a multitude of uses.  A dignity cover for breastfeeding, mopping up spills, a bib, I even know a little girl that had a muslin as her comforter.  My girls are now 9 and 10 and I still have a drawer full of muslins.  I use them when they kids get the paints out or spill their drink and I still use them in my photography studio during a newborn photography session and to clean cake up after a cake smash photoshoot.

2)  A changing mat is essential to stop the explosive yellow goo going everywhere but consider if you really need a changing table.  I had one in Elizabeth's nursery and rarely used it.  I found it much easier and quicker to change baby on my knee or on the floor in the lounge.  The trip upstairs to use the changing table was to much effort and it just ended up a dumping ground for the washing I never had time to put away.

3) If your bottle feeding.  The little ready made cartons of formula are a godsend when on the go.  Keep a stock of these for when your out and about.  They stay fresh and are much easier than carrying a flask of warm water and a tupperware of remeasured formula powder around with you.    Many of my clients have told me that they found the Perfect Prep machine to be more hassle than its worth so this is maybe one to avoid.

4) Never buy a second hand car seat.  You don't know if it has been in an accident or has any internal damage.  A car seat and a mattress are the 2 things that you should always buy new!   Everything else I would suggest buying 2nd hand.  So many baby items are outgrown or hardly used and you can get some real good buys and often sell things on for the same as you paid for them.

5) The one thing I could not have lived without was the girls musical swing chair.  They both loved it and would spend lots of time relaxing and taking in the hanging toys.  It allowed me to get on with those essential tasks like washing and going to the toilet.  I even used to pop ours in the bathroom whilst taking a shower so they were secure but I could still see them.    Some of my lovely clients have recommended the Bambeano beanbag chair for similar reasons.    As my daughter got older she loved her Bumbo seat but others have added this to the list of worst purchases.

Thank you to Demi's Mummy for sending me this cute picture to share.

6)  There are so many gorgeous little outfits in the shops designed to tempt us.  But believe me you will always have more than you need and end up passing some of them on with the tags still attached.  Before baby arrives purchase the minimum you need, you will receive loads of clothes as gifts so save your pennies for other things or buy clothes in bigger sizes because everyone will buy you first size clothes.   And don't buy expensive items either.  Baby Poo stains and you'll be heartbroken when you have to bin that Laura Ashley piece, cheap and cheerful all the way.

7)  This ones is a freebie and something I use in my photography studio.  Download a white noise app onto your phone.  Its a life saver.  I never knew about these when mine were little but I used to put Alyssa's moses basket in the utility room as she would be happy and relaxed when the tumble drier was on.

8)  Don't buy lots of cute teddies.  I still regret this 10 years on!  Buy a special one but only 1.  My 10 year old won't part with any that have a special meaning to her.   'Nanny brought that one when I was born',  'That was the one you got me for my first birthday', 'Daddy brought these when I was having my operation', are all things that she has said when i've tried to get her to have a sort out.  We recently moved house and having managed to get her to part with a bin bag full of teddies she still brought 2 full bin bags full to the new house!

9)  I wasted lots of money on cute little shoes for my girls.   Why?  Because they looked pretty, but what a waste of money.   Babies don't walk and as soon as they find their hands they will be pulling them off and throwing them out the buggy!  On the flip side of this have lots of socks (or better still tights) as they too get pulled off and lost all the time.  Or better still invest in some sickens.  Not something I'd heard of but they come highly recommended from my clients.

10)  I could not have survived without a baby gro bag.  Much safer and more practical than the fancy bedding sets.  Both my girls loved them, the worst thing about them was getting them to switch to normal bedding as they got older.

Thank you to Daniel's Mum for sending me this cute little picture to share

11)  Many of my clients have said that a separate baby bath was their worst purchase and its easier to buy a little seat to go in the bath.  I certainly loved my daughters baby bath first time around but ditched it with number 2 as it was easier to bath the girls together.

12) Get a good quality buggy buddy, to store all the bits and bobs you need to hand while out and about.  There is nothing worse than rummaging in your hand bag while on the move.

I hope you have found this guide helpful and thank you to all those that offered their wisdom.  We are all different and some gadgets are a god send to some and a waste of time, space and money to others so do your research and consider your own lifestyle and needs.

What are your best baby buys?  What do you regret spending money on?   I look forward to reading your recommendations in the comments section below.

New Photography Prop delivery

Photographing and capturing the early days of my clients newborn babies is such a privilage.  It is important to me that part of what I offer is unique and fresh baby photos.  I don't want my clients looking at their newborn images and feeling they have the same as my other clients, I want the images I create to be personal to each family.  So it is essential that the props and outfits available in my photography studio near Spalding offer a wide choice of colours and designs.  With this in mind I have recently updated and added to my collection.

I thought I'd share some of the wonderful new items available for new parents to chose from when they visit.  All outfits, headbands and wraps are designed specifically for newborn photographers by specialist prop designers and help to add variety and colour to the gallery of baby images parents are presented with when they visit for their personal viewing session.

How to celebrate your baby's 1st Birthday! Ways to celebration your baby turning 1.

Even though your baby won't remember their 1st birthday celebrations, they still create wonderful memories for family, and hopefully some great photos you'll treasure forever. It is all too easy to get yourself into a “Pinterest hole” trying to throw the most creative party ever, but here are some top tips on simple but fun ways to mark your little one turning one.

1)  I'm sure you'll want to throw a party.  Even though they won't remember it, you and family will love watching them celebrate and have fun.  But keep it simple, a family BBQ or soft play fun with their friends.   You could include so quirky memories as part of your decorations.  A personalised home made banner or a number one decorated with photos of baby.

2) Take a photo of baby in a specific spot, one you can use each year.  Then take a picture in that spot each year so you can see them grow.   Against the front door would be a good place to show how much taller they are, or even next to their wall height chart if you have one.

3) Make a time capsule.  Include the headlines from the days newspaper, a recording of what is number one in the charts, a picture of the family and his little friends. Something special for them to open when they are grown up.

4) Enjoy a nice family day out, a trip to the local petting zoo or somewhere similar.  Take lots of photos and enjoy making memories as a family.

5)  This one's my favourite.  Write your baby a letter.  This is something to do on each birthday and keep safe.  Then give them as a gift on their 18th Birthday.   The letters can be about anything you choose,  how much you love them, the best and worst highlights of the year, maybe include a photograph too so they get a record of how they changed as they grew up.

6) Book a family photoshoot.  Record your baby as they grow with some professional family photos.  As my children have grown up they love to see pictures on the wall that include me too.

7)  Book a cake smash photoshoot.  These are currently one of the most popular photography sessions I offer, they can be themed to represent babies emerging personality and create a wonderful record of babies special day.

rainbow cake smash photography, baby covered in cakerainbow cake smash photo Girls vintage themed cake smash by Slice of Life Photography, LincolnVintage Girls cake smash photographer

8) Baby won't need lots of toys and presents. Lets be honest their toy box is over flowing already, but buy them something special they will be able to keep and treasure as they grow up.  Both my girls have a 'treasured bear' ornament that has the same name as them.

and finally don't forget to celebrate your achievement too, you've survived the first year of parenthood, a year of nappies, sleepless nights, messy baby led weaning and teething.  This needs to be recorded too, so once baby has worn themselves out playing with the cardboard boxes and balloons crack open the champagne and toast yourself to a job well done.

Do you have any suggestions to add?  What did you do to celebrate your baby turning one?  I'd  love to hear in the comments below.

Father Day gift ideas Ideas for Fathers Day gifts

18th June 2017

Fathers day is fast approaching.  This year it falls they day after my 'big' birthday so its hard to forget.  So I thought I'd share some ideas on how to show Daddy he is loved and appreciated.

Home made gifts always go down well and are a great activity to keep kids entertained.  It doesn't need to be anything fancy.  A card decorated with stickers of cars or a lovely picture frame hand decorated with gems or coloured in with sharpies.  For mothers day my 2 girls decorated the house with home made posters telling me they loved me.  This was far more precious than the mug that they brought to add to the collection of other mum mugs I have in the cupboard.

Personalised 'Dad' gifts.  Silly socks or 'best dad' trophy.  He may feel a little silly wearing them but you bet the kids will have a big grin on their face when he does.  I particularly liked this book from 'Not on the High Street', personalised with things about Dad that will also encourage early reading together.

Fingerprint jewellery.   There are lots of companies online that make these wonderful keepsakes.  I have a beautiful necklace that has my girls hand and footprints on.   I have also seen stunning mens cufflinks, leather effect male brackets and keyrings with fingerprints on.  A perfect gift to treasure always.

What about an activity they can share.  I found this fun steam engine experience for two, perfect if Daddy loves old trains.

You can't go wrong with a beautiful family photograph.  I bet there are loads of pictures of your children around your home but how many of them contain Mummy and Daddy too? My kids favourite pictures are the ones that include me too.    It doesn't need to be a professional photo.  Pictures from fun days out make great talking points when on display.  Alternatively consider a voucher for a family photo shoot so you can update your professional family portraits.
